Polish anger over Washington's disregard for NATO allies in the Iran war

A senior advisor to the Polish president stated that the United States had shown a clear “lack of respect” for the other NATO member states by declaring war on Iran without any prior consultation with its allies. Despite Warsaw’s close relationship with US President Donald Trump, this unilateral decision has angered Poland, which views the alliance as a strategic partnership requiring joint coordination on critical issues.

Marcin Bagdacz, head of the International Policy Office, pointed out that the current tensions and escalating situation in the Middle East are a direct result of decisions made by both Israel and the United States. He emphasized that these sensitive steps should have been discussed and consulted with allies within the institutional framework of NATO, rather than being imposed as a fait accompli. In an interview with the private radio station Zeit, he stressed that “if our transatlantic ally expects European support, the minimum of mutual respect requires prior consultation, not just turning to us when problems have already escalated.”.

The repercussions of a war with Iran on the internal cohesion of NATO

These statements are of paramount importance given the current geopolitical shifts, as the outbreak of war with Iran casts a long shadow over regional and international security. Historically, NATO was founded on the principle of collective defense and continuous consultation, and any transgression of this principle threatens to fracture the Western alliance. The anticipated impact of such unilateral decisions extends beyond the Middle East, encompassing the security of all of Europe, thus presenting member states with unprecedented security and economic challenges, particularly in light of energy crises and the need to secure global shipping lanes, which are directly affected by any conflict in the Arabian Gulf region.

US-Polish convergence: between interests and principles

These criticisms come at a time of noticeably improved bilateral relations, and the Polish official's remarks contradict the generally pro-Trump stance adopted by the political establishment in Poland. Historically, Poland has been one of Washington's strongest allies in Eastern Europe, particularly after the collapse of the Soviet Union and its accession to NATO in 1999. Warsaw has consistently sought to bolster the American military presence on its soil as a security guarantee. In this context, the Polish president visited the United States last week, where he inspected an assembly site for the F-35 fighter jets destined for Poland and addressed a gathering of conservatives in Texas, emphasizing that Washington is not merely an ally but a partner that shares ideals with Poland. However, he also reminded the audience that 66 Polish servicemen have lost their lives in joint operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and that Polish taxpayers contribute to funding the American military presence in their country.

Calls for support from Washington despite tactical disagreements

Despite the diplomatic friction, Warsaw did not close the door to cooperation. In the same interview, Będac explicitly called on capable NATO members, particularly those with large naval and air forces, to "support our American ally as quickly as possible." He warned against abandoning Washington, saying, "If we Europeans, as the closest allies of the United States, do not take the initiative to help the Americans in this critical situation, it will be very difficult to expect their support later when we face our own crises.".

These developments coincide with sharp criticism leveled by Donald Trump against several NATO member states, including France, Spain, and Italy. This attack stemmed from these countries' refusal to allow US military aircraft to cross their airspace or use their air bases to transport logistical and military equipment to Israel, as part of military operations related to the recent conflict that erupted on February 28. This divergence in positions reflects the magnitude of the challenges facing the Western alliance in unifying its ranks regarding the complex crises in the Middle East.
