Saudi Arabia supports the efforts of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting the international community's efforts to combat extremism, emphasizing the vital role of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre in maintaining international peace and security. This clear affirmation came during a speech delivered by the Kingdom's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr. Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Al-Wasil, at the high-level meeting of ambassadors held under the "UN80" initiative. This initiative aims to review and assess the capabilities of the relevant UN office to ensure its effective response to escalating global security challenges.

Leading role in establishing the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre

The historical roots of this close cooperation date back to 2005, when the Saudi capital, Riyadh, hosted the International Counter-Terrorism Conference. At that time, the Kingdom launched a landmark initiative to establish a specialized international center. These efforts culminated in the center's official establishment in 2011 under the auspices of the United Nations, making it a cornerstone of global efforts.

The Kingdom is proud to be the founding donor and largest supporter of this international body, chairing its advisory board and guiding its strategic policies. Saudi Arabia has generously contributed over US$110 million to support the center's budget and programs, reflecting its deep understanding of the importance of collective institutional action in eradicating the roots of extremism and cutting off its funding sources internationally.

Addressing technological threats and emerging security challenges

In light of rapid technological advancements, the Kingdom warned during the UN80 initiative meeting of emerging security threats that now pose a serious danger to societies. Dr. Al-Wasil emphasized the need to provide UN institutions with sustainable resources that enable them to counter the exploitation of modern technologies by extremist groups.

This includes the increasing use of artificial intelligence technologies, digital platforms, and social media in recruitment, disseminating disinformation, and raising illicit funds. The anticipated impact of enhancing the center's technological capabilities will directly contribute to strengthening global cyberspace and protecting young people from falling prey to extremist ideologies.

Regional and international significance: Africa at the heart of the matter

At the regional and international levels, the impact of Saudi and UN efforts extends to areas most affected by conflict. The Kingdom has particularly highlighted the African continent, which continues to suffer from extremist attacks that hinder development and stability. Saudi Arabia strongly condemned the recent attacks targeting the Republic of Mali, specifically the capital, Bamako, considering them clear evidence of the urgent need to intensify efforts.

To achieve tangible results, the Kingdom called for building an effective international partnership and a coordinated response that takes into account the national priorities of affected countries. Empowering African countries through the center's capacity-building programs will enhance local and regional security, positively impacting global stability and mitigating the waves of displacement and irregular migration associated with security disturbances.
