Inspection tours in Mecca to ensure the safety of pilgrims

As part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of pilgrims, the Makkah branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture conducted over 15,000 inspection tours in Makkah , targeting markets, slaughterhouses, and related facilities. This initiative aims to guarantee full compliance with health and environmental regulations, providing a safe and healthy environment for pilgrims to perform their rituals with ease and peace of mind.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has a long history and extensive experience in managing the Hajj season, one of the world's largest annual human gatherings. Over the decades, Saudi government agencies have developed a comprehensive monitoring system based on the latest technologies and international standards to ensure food and water safety. Securing food for millions of pilgrims within a short timeframe and a specific geographical area requires meticulous proactive planning, which the Ministry translates into annual, intensive operational plans aimed at preventing any disease outbreaks or food poisoning incidents that could disrupt the Hajj.

Results of inspection tours in Mecca and the outcome of slaughterhouse operations

The inspection tours conducted in Mecca, totaling 15,504 field visits, resulted in the detection of 462 various violations, which were dealt with according to established regulations. In a related matter, the total number of animals slaughtered in the holy city's abattoirs during the Hajj season reached 90,825 head of livestock, all of which underwent thorough veterinary inspection. These inspections resulted in the partial condemnation of 8,492 carcasses and the complete condemnation of 1,125 carcasses deemed unfit for human consumption, in order to protect public health. Furthermore, in keeping with the values ​​of solidarity and the proper use of sacrificial animals, 232 healthy carcasses were delivered to approved charitable organizations for distribution to those in need.

Promoting environmental sustainability and volunteer work during Hajj

The monitoring efforts also included the central Al-Kaakiyah market, where field inspections resulted in the confiscation and delivery of over 7,618 kilograms of fruits and vegetables fit for consumption to charitable organizations, supporting the principles of sustainability and reducing food waste. Volunteer work also saw an exceptional presence, with 327 volunteer opportunities organized, involving 1,161 volunteers across 10 specialized associations. These volunteers provided 1,585 meals and over 305,191 bottles of water to pilgrims. The Support Services Department bolstered these efforts by deploying 26 field teams comprising 341 employees, utilizing 57 vehicles and equipment, and issuing 443 permits to individuals to ensure rapid response and efficient field operations.
