Nursing at the Makkah Health Cluster breaks down language barriers to serve pilgrims

In a pioneering step aimed at enhancing medical services provided to pilgrims, the nursing staff of the Makkah Health Cluster successfully broke down language barriers by launching an innovative awareness initiative entitled “In Their Language.” This initiative is a key component of the “Rufaidah” strategic initiative during the 1447 AH Hajj season, which aimed to provide direct health guidance and preventative instructions to pilgrims in their native languages, ensuring the accurate delivery and optimal application of medical information to protect everyone’s health.

How did the nursing staff at the Makkah Health Cluster contribute to promoting preventive awareness?

The initiative achieved tangible success on the ground, with field teams successfully delivering awareness messages to over 827 pilgrims of diverse nationalities and cultures. The initiative relied on qualified nursing staff fluent in multiple international languages, which facilitated the simplification of complex medical concepts and made preventative advice accessible to pilgrims in a humane and direct manner. This guidance focused on preventing heatstroke, the importance of personal hygiene, the proper use of medications, and managing physical exertion during the Hajj rituals.

Historical background of healthcare efforts during Hajj seasons

For decades, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been developing its healthcare system dedicated to serving pilgrims to the Holy Mosque in Mecca. From the humble beginnings of medical services in the holy sites to the establishment of modern health complexes, the goal has always been to provide comprehensive and free medical care that ensures the well-being of pilgrims. The “In Their Language” initiative is a natural extension of this humanitarian and organizational legacy, as care is no longer limited to providing treatment alone, but has expanded to include preventative medicine and interactive awareness programs that take into account the vast cultural diversity of the pilgrims, who represent dozens of countries around the world.

Dimensions and impact of preventive initiatives on global health security

The importance of this initiative extends beyond providing individual advice, impacting regional and international health security. When pilgrims return to their countries equipped with health and preventative awareness, it directly contributes to reducing the spread of epidemics and transboundary diseases. Locally, these efforts support the objectives of the Health Sector Transformation Program, stemming from the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which focuses on facilitating access to healthcare services and implementing the highest standards of quality and efficiency.

Standard performance indicators for the “Rafida” strategic initiative

It is worth noting that the “Rufaidah” initiative achieved exceptional operational figures this season, reflecting the high level of preparedness of its nursing staff. These indicators included verifying 17,088 general competencies to support the efficiency of nurses, in addition to recording the attendance of over 26,000 participants in specialized lectures and training workshops. Furthermore, the teams carried out more than 100 hours of intensive fieldwork covering 87 nursing divisions in the Holy Sites and the Holy City of Mecca, ensuring the provision of distinguished and sustainable healthcare to all pilgrims.
