Lowest temperature in Saudi Arabia in 2025: Tarif records -5 degrees Celsius

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia has released important climate data regarding weather conditions in 2025. The city of Tarif, in the Northern Borders region, topped the list of coldest cities, recording a record low of -5 degrees Celsius. This announcement is part of the center's periodic reports documenting weather changes and monitoring climatic phenomena affecting various regions of the Kingdom.

Tarif... the cold gateway to the north

The province of Tarif and the Northern Borders region in general are among the areas most susceptible to polar cold waves in winter, due to their geographical location and high altitude. This makes them more prone to receiving cold air masses from Siberia and Eastern Europe than other regions. Historically, these areas have experienced very low temperatures, often accompanied by snowfall and frost, making temperatures as low as -5 degrees Celsius a natural extension of the prevailing climate in this important geographical area of the Kingdom.

The importance and impact of climate monitoring

The National Center of Meteorology explained that the process of documenting and analyzing this climate data goes beyond mere observation; its primary aim is to enhance climate awareness within the community and institutions. This data plays a vital role in supporting proactive planning for critical sectors such as agriculture, transportation, and education, and in improving preparedness for dealing with extreme weather events. Early warnings of temperature drops help farmers protect their crops from frost, alert motorists on highways to take precautions, and support relevant authorities in making decisions regarding school closures or delays to ensure the safety of students in the most affected areas.

Temperatures in other cities of the Kingdom

In a related context, and considering the weather conditions for Tuesday, January 6, the meteorological data showed a variation in the minimum temperatures recorded in different cities, with the readings being as follows:

  • Al-Qurayyat and Rafha: recorded two degrees Celsius.
  • Hafar Al-Batin: Recorded 3 degrees Celsius.
  • Arar, Sakaka, and Tarif (today): The minimum temperature reached 4 degrees Celsius.
  • Riyadh, Abha, Buraidah and Hail: Temperatures stabilized at 5 degrees Celsius.

Rain and wind forecast

Regarding the accompanying weather phenomena, the Meteorology Department confirmed the continued possibility of light rain in scattered parts of the Madinah region. The department also warned of the continued impact of active winds that may stir up dust and sand, reducing horizontal visibility in parts of Madinah, as well as the eastern parts of the Makkah, Al-Baha, and Asir regions. The department urged everyone to follow official weather forecasts and exercise caution.
