Mecca: 260 patients to be saved by delicate brain interventions in 2025

King Abdullah Medical City in the Holy City of Mecca has achieved a remarkable medical accomplishment that adds to the record of successes of the health system in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as the Interventional Neuroradiology Department was able to save the lives of 260 patients during the past year 2025. These patients were facing an imminent risk of death or permanent disabilities and total paralysis, but precise and urgent medical interventions prevented this thanks to God and then thanks to the advanced medical competencies.
An integrated health system to serve pilgrims and citizens
These achievements are particularly significant given the strategic geographical location of King Abdullah Medical City in Mecca, which serves as the primary medical center for complex and specialized cases in the Western Region. Its services extend beyond citizens and residents to include pilgrims and Umrah performers who visit throughout the year. This accomplishment reflects the high level of preparedness for handling emergency and complex cases that may affect visitors, thus enhancing the peace of mind of those visiting the Holy Mosque and reaffirming the Kingdom's commitment to providing the best possible healthcare to its guests.
Details of precise medical interventions
In detailing this achievement, the Medical City, an active member of the Makkah Health Cluster, explained that its medical teams professionally handled 140 critical cases of acute strokes. These patients underwent emergency cerebral catheterization procedures aimed at removing blood clots and restoring blood flow to the brain in record time, thus preventing paralysis and restoring vital functions.
The medical team's efforts also extended to managing 120 other cases of severe cerebral hemorrhage resulting from complex aneurysms and arterial malformations. These cases required highly skilled and precise surgical techniques to close the bleeding sources using the latest global technologies, while preserving surrounding vital tissues. The interventions also included the treatment of delicate vascular malformations in the spinal cord.
The "saving lives" path and keeping pace with Vision 2030
The specialized department operates according to a "life-saving" protocol, a highly efficient system that ensures an immediate response from the moment a patient arrives at the emergency room, through rapid diagnosis using smart systems, all the way to the operating room. This race against time is a crucial factor in reducing complications and disability rates.
This medical advancement is perfectly aligned with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and the Health Sector Transformation Program, which aims to facilitate access to healthcare services and improve their quality and efficiency. The presence of specialized centers of excellence, such as the Interventional Neuroradiology Department in Makkah, established in 2015 and developed into a regional reference center, directly contributes to reducing mortality rates and improving patients' quality of life, thus solidifying the Kingdom's position as a leading destination for specialized healthcare.
