Launch of the Judicial Intelligence Hackathon to develop smart courts in Saudi Arabia

The “Judicial Intelligence Hackathon,” the first event of its kind organized by the Board of Grievances and exclusively sponsored by Elm Company, kicked off today, Wednesday, and will continue for two days. This legal and technical gathering aims to develop advanced digital solutions to enhance smart litigation services and improve the user experience, with the participation of elite qualifying teams and a large number of experts and specialists in the fields of technology and law.
The context of digital transformation and Vision 2030
This hackathon is a strategic step within the comprehensive digital transformation underway in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, aligning with the goals of Vision 2030, which places great emphasis on developing e-government and digitizing judicial services. For years, the Kingdom's judicial system, specifically the Board of Grievances, has been working to automate procedures and reduce reliance on paper transactions, ultimately aiming for a fully integrated "digital court." This event serves as a vital link in integrating the latest artificial intelligence technologies into the justice system, reflecting the Kingdom's commitment to embracing innovation to enhance the efficiency of government agencies.
Hackathon events and innovation track
The first day of the hackathon was lively, with participating teams discussing their innovative projects, detailing their ideas and implementation mechanisms, and focusing on the direct impact of these solutions on the workflow in the administrative judiciary. The event included meetings and presentations addressing the regulatory frameworks for leveraging modern technologies in judicial proceedings, and how to strike a delicate balance between harnessing technology to expedite justice and preserving data privacy and the integrity of legal procedures.
Importance and expected impact
The “Judicial Intelligence Hackathon” is gaining significant importance that extends far beyond the local level; it is establishing a pioneering model in the region that combines legal expertise with programming experience. The outcomes of this event are expected to contribute to:
- Reducing the duration of litigation through artificial intelligence solutions that help in analyzing data and cases.
- Improving the efficiency of the administrative judiciary by automating routine tasks, allowing judges to focus on complex substantive aspects.
- Enhancing transparency and access to justice, which raises the Kingdom's international indicators in the efficiency of the judicial system.
Record turnout and wide participation
It is worth noting that the registration phase, which began at the end of last December and lasted for three weeks, witnessed a remarkable turnout, reflecting the passion of Saudi youth and specialists to participate in shaping the future of justice. The number of applicants exceeded 1,070, forming 260 teams of national talent in the fields of technology and law. These participants presented a wide range of innovative ideas and proposals aimed at developing work procedures in the administrative judiciary, ensuring high-quality work and increasing the satisfaction of those benefiting from judicial services.
