Innovative technologies in the Kingdom's environment, water and agriculture sectors

The Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture announced the launch of a pioneering national roadmap aimed at adopting 350 innovative technologies across the environment, water, and agriculture sectors. This strategic initiative, undertaken in partnership with over 100 stakeholders, will prioritize research and innovation, connecting more than 60 global technologies to approximately 45 promising challenges and opportunities within these vital sectors. This paves the way for a comprehensive transformation that supports environmental sustainability and water and food security in the Kingdom.

Historical context and an ambitious vision towards environmental sustainability

This initiative comes at a time when the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is undergoing an unprecedented historical transformation under the umbrella of “Saudi Vision 2030.” Historically, the environmental and agricultural sectors in the Arabian Peninsula have faced numerous challenges related to water scarcity and an arid climate. However, the Kingdom has spearheaded concerted efforts to overcome these obstacles through investment in water desalination and the development of modern irrigation systems. Today, the launch of this roadmap represents a natural extension of those efforts, as the Ministry seeks to institutionalize innovation and transform environmental challenges into promising economic and investment opportunities by integrating modern technologies into the core of daily operations.

Pioneering programs to enable innovative technologies in the environment, water and agriculture sectors

The ministry explained that the new roadmap is based on three main programs designed to ensure the successful implementation of these innovations:

  • The Regulatory and Experimental Environment Program: It aims to provide the necessary support for innovations that may face regulatory obstacles, and to facilitate their testing in real and stimulating environments.
  • Intellectual Property Program: which seeks to protect current and future intellectual property rights and patents, and to assist innovators in the commercial marketing of their products.
  • Innovation Dissemination Program: Dedicated to supporting technologies in their advanced stages to ensure their successful market entry and widespread adoption.

Technical priorities to enhance water and food security in the Kingdom

The roadmap includes a set of high-priority technologies distributed across the three sectors. In the environment sector, the focus is on smart irrigation systems, advanced waste treatment, ecosystem monitoring, and natural rangeland management. In the water sector, priorities include smart leak management technologies, advanced reverse osmosis, water-saving innovations, and adaptive technologies for reusing treated wastewater.

In the agricultural sector, technologies such as the use of drones and satellites for crop monitoring, integrated aquaculture management, and advanced technologies to reduce food loss and waste are prominent, directly contributing to strengthening local food supply chains.

Expected regional and international impacts of Saudi innovation

The importance of this map extends beyond the local level, creating a significant regional and international impact. Regionally, the Kingdom offers a model for countries facing similar climatic conditions, fostering collaboration in combating desertification and managing water resources. Internationally, these efforts contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals and support the Kingdom's global initiatives, such as the Green Middle East Initiative. Adopting these advanced technologies positions the Kingdom as a leading exporter of innovative environmental solutions and strengthens its status as a global hub for research and development in the fields of environment, water, and sustainable agriculture.
