Red alert: Heavy rains sweep across most regions of Saudi Arabia

Several regions across Saudi Arabia are experiencing severe weather fluctuations, with a red alert issued warning of heavy rainfall in the coming hours. This weather event has prompted a full mobilization of relevant authorities to monitor developments and ensure the safety of citizens and residents throughout the country.
Map of areas affected by heavy rainfall in Saudi Arabia
Recent weather alerts have covered a wide area of the Kingdom, with heavy rainfall concentrated in the capital, Riyadh, the Eastern Province, and the regions of Qassim, Hail, and Madinah. The effects have also extended to the southwestern highlands, including Asir and Jazan, reaching as far as the Northern Borders region. These rains are accompanied by strong surface winds, leading to reduced horizontal visibility in some open areas and on highways, necessitating extreme caution.
Climatic context: Weather changes in the Arabian Peninsula
Historically, the Arabian Peninsula is known for its arid desert climate. However, during seasonal transitions or winter, the Kingdom experiences periods of atmospheric instability due to the convergence of cold and warm air masses. In recent years, an increase in the frequency and intensity of rainfall events has been observed, which meteorologists attribute to global climate change affecting the paths of low-pressure systems. The National Center for Meteorology plays a vital and ongoing role in monitoring these climatic shifts, issuing early warnings to mitigate potential risks, and providing accurate public guidance.
Expected impacts on vital sectors and public life
Heavy rainfall has a dual impact at both the local and regional levels. On the positive side, it contributes to replenishing groundwater, supporting the agricultural sector, and revitalizing vegetation. On the other hand, these large quantities of water pose immediate challenges to infrastructure and traffic flow. Therefore, regional and municipal authorities mobilize their teams and equipment to drain water accumulations from streets and tunnels to ensure smooth traffic flow. These severe weather conditions may also prompt education departments in affected areas to suspend in-person classes and switch to remote learning to ensure the safety of students.
Civil Defense guidelines to ensure safety
Under these circumstances, the General Directorate of Civil Defense issued a series of continuous alerts and warnings. The Directorate urged everyone to exercise caution and strictly adhere to safety guidelines. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of staying away from areas where water accumulates, valleys, and flood channels, which could pose a sudden and imminent danger. Security authorities also warned against attempting to cross flooded roads in vehicles, stressing the need to remain in safe locations during periods of heavy rainfall and to follow official updates and alerts issued through approved channels to avoid any accidents.
