Arrests in Iran: 38 detained on charges of spying for Israel

security forces recently carried out Iranian , detaining at least 38 people across the country on charges of espionage and collaboration with Israel. These developments come at a time of unprecedented regional tensions, with local media reporting that those arrested are accused of sending sensitive information to the opposition channel Iran International, coinciding with the ongoing military escalation in the Middle East.
Details of arrest campaign in Iran and targeted areas
In detailing these security operations, the Iranian news agency Fars reported that in West Azerbaijan province alone, 20 people were arrested and detained under judicial orders. Those arrested face serious charges of sending details and coordinates of sensitive military and security sites to Israeli intelligence. The agency quoted the province's prosecutor, Hossein Majidi, confirming that these arrests resulted from precise raids targeting networks believed to be directly linked to the occupation's security apparatus and operating within the province.
In addition, the Tasnim news agency reported the arrest of 18 other individuals on charges of communicating with and sending information to Iran International, a London-based television channel. Tehran classifies this channel as a "terrorist" entity and accuses it of acting as a media arm for Israel. According to the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence, these individuals sent photos of targeted sites, as well as information about other facilities.
The historical context of the intelligence war between Tehran and Tel Aviv
These incidents are not isolated events, but rather an extension of a long-standing intelligence war, or what is known as the “shadow war,” between Tehran and Tel Aviv. Over the years, the two sides have exchanged accusations of carrying out espionage and sabotage operations. Iran has previously witnessed a series of assassinations targeting prominent nuclear scientists, in addition to cyberattacks targeting vital facilities such as the Natanz nuclear reactor. In turn, Israel accuses Iran of attempting to build spy networks within its borders and targeting its interests abroad. This long history of covert conflict makes any internal security operation in Iran an event with deeper implications, linked to the struggle for survival and influence in the region.
Regional and international repercussions of the security escalation
These security developments are of paramount importance and have anticipated repercussions extending beyond Iran's borders to encompass the regional and international landscape. Domestically, these arrests reflect the heightened state of alert within Iranian security agencies as they attempt to close intelligence gaps. Regionally, the exposure of spy networks of this scale exacerbates tensions between regional states and Israel, potentially foreshadowing retaliatory actions or an unpredictable military escalation. Internationally, these events present the international community with a complex situation, where political conflicts intertwine with information warfare, further complicating diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East.
Digital isolation and the search for alternatives to communication
In this tense atmosphere, a large segment of the Iranian population suffers from near-total digital isolation from the outside world. This situation has been exacerbated by frequent internet outages and strict restrictions imposed since the outbreak of previous waves of protests and the escalation of the Middle East conflict. To circumvent this digital blockade, some Iranians have resorted to using alternative technologies such as Starlink devices produced by the American company SpaceX, which provide internet access via satellite, bypassing local censorship. It is worth noting that Iranian authorities officially banned any form of cooperation with Iran International TV last January, warning citizens of severe legal consequences for any contact with the channel.
