Al-Khobar Green Initiative: Planting 163,000 trees to enhance quality of life

The launch of the Green Khobar initiative towards a sustainable future

In a pioneering step reflecting its commitment to environmental sustainability and urban development, the Eastern Province Municipality has exceeded all planned targets within the Al-Khobar Green Initiative, successfully planting 13,800 shade trees across 32 key locations in the governorate during the current planting season. This strategic initiative aims to humanize the city, enhance the urban landscape, and improve the quality of life and environment for both citizens and residents, making Al-Khobar a model for sustainable development.

Strategic context: The Kingdom's vision and addressing environmental challenges

The achievements of the Green Khobar initiative cannot be separated from the broader context of the major transformations taking place in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Since the launch of Saudi Vision 2030, the Quality of Life Program has emerged as one of the most important pillars aimed at improving the lifestyle of individuals and families and building a society where its members enjoy a balanced way of life. These local efforts complement the Saudi Green Initiative launched by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, which aims to plant billions of trees across the Kingdom to combat desertification, reduce carbon emissions, and lower temperatures in cities. This historic shift towards a green economy reflects the Kingdom's commitment to international treaties on climate change and places afforestation projects at the forefront of national priorities.

Details of the agricultural achievement and expansion of the green space

In detailing this achievement, Faisal Al-Zahrani, the official spokesperson for the Eastern Province Municipality, explained that the initial plan targeted only 11 locations. However, the pace of work and completion doubled to include main roads, residential neighborhoods, and important intersections. Al-Zahrani noted that the total number of trees in Al-Khobar has increased significantly to 163,800, directly contributing to enhancing the city's urban landscape. Furthermore, the area of green spaces has increased by 120,000 square meters, bringing the total area to over 2.3 million square meters. The efforts were not limited to trees; the season also saw the planting of over 1.4 million flowers and shrubs to create a distinctive visual and aesthetic character throughout the city.

Biodiversity and selection of suitable trees

The municipality adopted precise scientific and environmental standards in its landscaping efforts, utilizing eight tree species suitable for the local environment. These species are characterized by their ability to withstand climatic conditions, provide ample shade, and reach heights exceeding four meters. Among the most prominent of these species are neem, fig, poinciana, and jasmine. Key locations where trees were planted included major thoroughfares such as King Fahd Road, King Faisal Road, King Saud Road, and Prince Turki Road, as well as vital streets like Abdul Latif Al-Fawzan Street, the extension of the Al-Sadaf Corniche Road, Al-Aziziyah Walkway, and public parks.

Expected impact: Al Khobar to be among the top 100 cities globally

The anticipated impact of these environmental projects extends beyond local aesthetics to regional and international dimensions. Locally, increasing green spaces contributes to air purification and encourages residents to engage in walking and outdoor activities, positively impacting public health. Internationally, these intensive efforts and ongoing preparations for the upcoming planting season, aimed at doubling the number of trees, are central to the ambitious goal of positioning Al-Khobar among the top 100 most livable cities globally by 2030. This ambition solidifies the status of Saudi cities as sustainable global destinations, capable of providing a healthy and attractive environment for both residents and investments.
