Filipino culture in Riyadh: Fashion and crafts within a global harmony 2

Philippine cultural pavilions participating in the "Global Harmony 2" initiative witnessed a large public turnout, transforming Al-Suwaidi Park, one of the main areas of Riyadh Season, into a vibrant window onto the rich Philippine heritage. This event, organized by the Ministry of Media in partnership with the General Entertainment Authority and the Quality of Life Program, offers visitors a rich experience that blends tradition and modernity.
A journey into the heart of Philippine heritage
The event featured eight specialized pavilions showcasing the ingenuity of Filipino artisans. Visitors were able to observe the intricate details of traditional Filipino clothing making, as well as the art of seashell carving and the crafting of jewelry and ornaments. The pavilions went beyond mere displays, offering the public the opportunity for direct interaction with the artisans, enhancing their understanding of the artistic effort invested in each piece, from the selection of raw materials to the final product.
Natural resources reflect the geography of the place
Filipino handicrafts derive their significance from their close connection to the geography of the Philippine archipelago. Using sustainable natural materials such as bamboo, abaca (Manila hemp), and shells sourced from the Pacific Ocean, artisans reflect a community culture that respects the environment and harnesses its resources to serve art. These crafts are an integral part of Filipino national identity, passed down through generations and preserved as a symbol of resilience and folk creativity.
Festive atmosphere and folk music
In addition to the handicrafts, visitors experienced a vibrant carnival atmosphere through musical performances and folk dances presented by a selection of Filipino artists and influencers. The program featured a variety of traditional songs and dances depicting stories from daily life in rural Philippines, creating a dynamic interaction among the diverse audience and fostering the spirit of camaraderie and harmony that the initiative aims to cultivate.
The importance of the initiative in promoting coexistence
The second edition of the "Global Harmony" initiative aligns with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to improve quality of life and promote cultural openness. These events play a pivotal role in integrating residents into the fabric of Saudi society, as the Filipino community is one of the largest expatriate communities in the Kingdom, and in contributing to its development. These activities help introduce Saudi society and other residents to the richness of Filipino culture, thus reinforcing the values of tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
It is worth noting that the initiative has so far succeeded in highlighting 11 diverse global cultures, and is preparing to complete its journey by celebrating three more cultures, thus confirming the Kingdom’s position as an incubator of cultural diversity and a global destination for human coexistence.
