Weather warnings for Jazan: Moderate rain and active winds

The National Center for Meteorology issued an important alert today, Friday, regarding weather developments in Jazan, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall across various parts of the region. This rainfall will be accompanied by strong surface winds, which may significantly reduce horizontal visibility. Drivers and those using highways are advised to exercise caution. The alert also included the possibility of hail, flash floods in valleys and ravines, and scattered thunderstorms.
The center explained in its official statement that this unstable weather condition is particularly affecting several mountainous and inland governorates in the region, including Al-Harath, Al-Dayer Bani Malik, Al-Raith, Al-Ardah, Al-Aydabi, Fifa, and Haroub, in addition to open areas and highways connecting these governorates. The center indicated that these warnings will remain in effect, God willing, until 9:00 PM this evening, requiring continuous monitoring of updates issued by official authorities.
Geographical nature and its impact on the weather of Jazan
The Jazan region, located in the far southwest of Saudi Arabia, is characterized by a unique geographical diversity, combining coastal plains along the Red Sea with towering mountain ranges such as the Fifa and Dayer mountains. This topographical diversity plays a crucial role in shaping Jazan's weather, as the mountains act as windbreaks, trapping moisture-laden winds and leading to cloud condensation and heavy rainfall, especially during periods of weather fluctuations and transitional seasons. Historically, the mountainous highlands of Jazan have been among the wettest regions in the Kingdom, contributing to the formation of a vast network of valleys that experience powerful flash floods after thunderstorms. This explains the authorities' proactive warnings aimed at protecting lives and property.
The importance of early warnings and their expected impact
These weather warnings are of paramount importance on several levels. Locally, the accurate alerts contribute to raising awareness among citizens and residents, guiding them to stay away from valleys and flood channels that may pose a significant danger. They also help government agencies, such as Civil Defense and traffic departments, to be prepared to deal with any emergencies that may result from road closures or water accumulation. On the other hand, rainfall has a major positive impact on the agricultural sector for which the region is renowned. Jazan is a vital food basket, producing tropical crops such as mangoes and Khawlani coffee, and these crops rely heavily on seasonal rainfall.
Safety guidelines for dealing with weather fluctuations
Given these forecasts, the General Directorate of Civil Defense consistently emphasizes the importance of adhering to public safety guidelines. It advises avoiding low-lying areas and refraining from attempting to cross wadis during flash floods, regardless of the water level. Drivers are also advised to maintain a safe distance, use hazard lights, and reduce speed to avoid skidding due to hail or water accumulation. Furthermore, it is crucial to follow the official channels of the National Center of Meteorology for reliable information and to avoid spreading rumors.
