Downdrafts in Saudi Arabia: The secret behind truck rollovers in the central region of the Kingdom

Recently, social media users circulated videos documenting terrifying moments of massive trucks overturning in the heart of the Kingdom, sparking widespread questions about the underlying causes of these sudden accidents. In this context, Professor Abdullah Al-Musnad, Vice President of the Saudi Weather and Climate Society, revealed the precise scientific details of the incident, confirming that the primary cause is the activity of downdrafts in Saudi Arabia. This is a highly dangerous weather phenomenon that recurs during certain seasons and requires extreme caution from drivers and highway users.

What is the phenomenon of downdrafts in Saudi Arabia and how do they occur?

Dr. Al-Musnad explained that the weather phenomena witnessed on the Qassim-Madinah roads are scientifically attributed to what is known as downdrafts, one of the most dangerous weather phenomena associated with the cumulonimbus cloud season, and which is particularly active during April each year. This phenomenon arises from the descent of cold, dry, and heavy air masses from deep within cumulonimbus clouds, specifically from high altitudes ranging from 3 to 10 kilometers.

These air masses surge with tremendous force towards the Earth's surface. Upon impact with the soil, they spread horizontally and violently in all directions, creating a powerful dust storm that takes drivers on open roads by surprise. Al-Musnad added that the physical cause behind these high speeds is the sudden cooling within the cloud, resulting from the evaporation of raindrops and the melting of hailstones. This increases the air's density and accelerates its downward movement in a phenomenon resembling an airburst the moment it touches the ground.

The destructive power of downdrafts and their logistical impact

Historically, these weather phenomena are part of the seasonal climate changes that the Arabian Peninsula experiences during the transition between seasons. The danger of these winds lies in their tremendous speed, which typically ranges from 80 to 120 kilometers per hour, and can exceed 150 kilometers per hour in extreme cases. This extreme speed is capable not only of overturning large trucks, but also of uprooting tents and caravans, and toppling large billboards and poorly secured light poles.

Locally and regionally, these incidents directly impact land transport and logistics services in Saudi Arabia, which serve as a vital artery connecting different regions and facilitating regional trade among the Gulf countries. Ensuring the safety of highways and raising awareness among heavy vehicle drivers are essential for protecting lives and property and minimizing economic losses resulting from disruptions to shipping or damage to transported goods.

Tips and guidelines for preventing the dangers of sudden storms

Al-Musnad pointed out that the danger of these winds also lies in the nature of their radial spread; they do not move in one direction like the rest of the traditional winds, but rather spread suddenly and fluctuate, which makes accurate prediction of their direction or intensity extremely difficult and increases the likelihood of accidents on highways.

In closing, the climate expert issued a direct warning to motorists and campers, urging them to exercise extreme caution. He stressed the importance of immediately leaving campsites upon noticing an approaching dust storm or dark horizontal clouds accompanied by strong winds or a sudden drop in temperature. He also advised truck drivers to park safely away from bridges and billboards, and to secure any light objects to ensure everyone's safety.
