Saudi Arabia weather: Heavy rain and flash floods in Al-Baha, urgent warnings issued

The National Center for Meteorology issued an important report on weather in Saudi Arabia , warning of severe and unstable weather conditions in the Al-Baha region and its governorates. The center explained that the region is experiencing heavy rainfall accompanied by strong and high-speed winds, leading to near-zero horizontal visibility, in addition to hail and flash floods in valleys and ravines, with a high probability of thunderstorms.

This rainy weather system includes the city of Al-Baha itself and extends to cover a large number of its governorates and districts, namely: Al-Aqiq, Al-Qura, Al-Mandaq, Baljurashi, Bani Hassan, Al-Makhwah, Qalwah, Al-Hajrah, and Ghamid Al-Zanad, in addition to the areas adjacent to these regions. The National Center for Meteorology indicated that this ongoing weather system began this morning and is expected to continue until 9:00 PM this evening.

Geographical factors and their impact on the weather in the highlands of Saudi Arabia

To understand the context of these weather fluctuations, one must consider the Kingdom's geography. Saudi Arabia's weather by great diversity due to its vast area and varied topography. The Al-Baha region, situated within the Sarawat Mountains, exemplifies areas directly affected by low-pressure systems and moist air currents originating from the Red Sea. The towering mountains contribute to lifting this moist air, leading to the condensation of cumulonimbus clouds and heavy rainfall—a recurring seasonal phenomenon that forms an essential part of the climate system in the southwestern region of the Kingdom.

Historically, these areas are known for their rainy seasons, which contribute to irrigating the agricultural terraces for which Al-Baha is famous. However, heavy rainfall in short periods of time may turn this blessing into a potential danger in the form of flash floods, which always requires activating emergency plans and closely monitoring weather reports.

Expected impacts and necessary safety measures

These warnings are of paramount importance at the local and regional levels, as the rainfall directly impacts transportation and public safety. Reduced visibility and flash floods pose a significant challenge to motorists on highways and secondary roads, particularly in mountainous areas with dangerous curves. Therefore, weather warnings are typically accompanied by strict instructions from Civil Defense to stay away from valleys and floodplains, and to avoid going out except in cases of extreme necessity during peak rainfall.

On the environmental and agricultural level, despite the potential risks, these rains are a vital source of groundwater and dams in the region, enhancing vegetation cover and supporting local agriculture, which is heavily dependent on seasonal rainwater, highlighting the delicate balance between utilizing water resources and the need to be wary of the risks of severe weather fluctuations.
