Historically, the link between bladder cancer and chemicals and smoking was not clearly established until the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With the onset of the Industrial Revolution, doctors began to notice a significant increase in the incidence of bladder cancer among workers in dye and chemical factories. As precise medical research advanced in subsequent decades, global studies unequivocally proved that tobacco contains thousands of carcinogens that are absorbed into the bloodstream and excreted by the kidneys, eventually settling in the bladder. She confirmed that the most common symptom is blood in the urine, which may change its color to bright red or cola-colored. Sometimes, the blood is not visible to the naked eye and is detected through detailed laboratory tests. It may also be accompanied by a burning sensation during urination.
She noted that men and older adults are the most affected by this disease. Other risk factors include advancing age, chronic bladder infections, a family history of the disease, and occupational exposure to chemicals such as arsenic and substances used in the manufacture of rubber, leather, and textiles.
