Buqayq Municipality plants 173,000 seedlings and develops public parks

As part of ongoing efforts to achieve sustainable development and improve the urban landscape in the Eastern Province, the Municipality of Buqayq Governorate new environmental achievements represented by the planting of more than 173,000 diverse seedlings, as part of its plan for the 2025 planting season. This step comes as a pivotal part of the “Our Eastern Province is Green” initiative, which aims to increase green spaces and combat desertification in line with the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 .

Promoting vegetation cover and sustainability standards

The governorate witnessed intensive field activity, with specialized teams planting 3,500 carefully selected trees, in addition to planting 170,000 seasonal flowers that enhanced the aesthetic appeal of main streets, public parks, squares, and flowerbeds. These efforts are part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at "humanizing cities" and increasing the per capita share of green spaces.

Mayor Mohammed Al-Dhafeeri explained that the selection of plants was not arbitrary, but rather based on precise technical and environmental criteria. The municipality focused on planting shade trees suited to the region's hot climate and characterized by low water consumption. The list included varieties such as neem, ficus-like fig, cassia glauca, fig tree, poinciana, bougainvillea, and jatropha. These trees contribute to purifying the air, reducing temperatures, and providing a healthier environment for residents.

Comprehensive maintenance of public facilities

In parallel with the tree-planting efforts, the municipality implemented a comprehensive maintenance program to ensure the sustainability of public facilities and the safety of their users. The program included the maintenance and rehabilitation of green spaces exceeding 350,000 square meters, reflecting the significant attention given to the environmental infrastructure in the governorate.

The work also included the renovation of 1,700 square meters of children's play areas to ensure a safe recreational environment, as well as the maintenance of 300 square meters of shade structures to protect visitors from the sun. These efforts aim to enhance the operational efficiency of the parks and gardens, making them attractive and natural havens for families and visitors throughout the year.

These projects are of particular importance in Buqayq Governorate, given its industrial nature and strategic location. Increasing vegetation cover not only enhances aesthetics but also plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, reducing carbon emissions, and improving the quality of life for residents. These initiatives underscore the municipal sector's commitment to implementing national initiatives such as "Green Saudi Arabia," which aims to create a more sustainable future for generations to come.
