Successful separation surgery of Somali twins Ramla and Rahma in Riyadh

Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Rabeeah, Advisor at the Royal Court, General Supervisor of the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Aid and Head of the Medical and Surgical Team, announced the successful completion of the separation surgery of the conjoined Somali twins, “Ramla and Rahma,” in implementation of the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister - may God protect them.

Dr. Al-Rabeeah confirmed that the operation, which was performed at King Abdullah Specialized Children’s Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City of the Ministry of National Guard in Riyadh, was a success, and the twins were transferred to separate beds for the first time in their lives, amid overwhelming joy from the medical team and the twins’ family.

The head of the medical team explained that the twins, Ramla and Rahma, aged 13 months, had arrived in the Kingdom on May 6, 2025. Detailed medical examinations revealed that they shared a lower abdomen and pelvis, as well as a shared colon, rectum, and pelvic bone, with overlapping urinary and reproductive systems.

Regarding the health status of the vital organs, Dr. Al-Rabeeah explained that the twin, Ramla, suffers from complete atrophy of both kidneys and total kidney failure, necessitating immediate dialysis after separation and preparation for a future kidney transplant. Her sister, Rahma, suffers from atrophy of her left kidney, while her right kidney functions adequately despite the presence of some cysts. This requires close and intensive medical monitoring in the intensive care unit to ensure the stability of her condition and vital functions.
