Zelenskyy requests US security guarantees to end the war with Russia

In a move reflecting Kyiv's desire to secure its strategic future before any potential settlement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy the United States to provide more precise and clear details regarding security guarantees for Ukraine . Speaking to reporters in Brussels, the Belgian capital, he emphasized that these guarantees are the cornerstone of talks aimed at ending the ongoing war with Russia.
The most important question is: What if the aggression returns?
During his press conference, Zelenskyy raised what he described as a question that has yet to receive a satisfactory answer. The Ukrainian president stated clearly: “There is a question I haven’t yet received an answer to… and that is the question of the overall security guarantees.” He explained that the core of Kyiv’s concerns lies in understanding the future American reaction, asking: “What will the United States do if Russia commits another act of aggression after any agreement is reached?”.
This question reflects Ukraine's deep concern about a repeat of past scenarios, as Kyiv seeks binding commitments that go beyond diplomatic promises, to ensure that Russia does not exploit any lull in order to regroup and launch new attacks.
Intense diplomatic activity in Washington
In a related development, Zelensky announced a new and crucial round of talks between Ukrainian and American officials. He indicated that a high-level Ukrainian delegation would travel to the United States for negotiations on Friday and Saturday. This visit comes as part of discussions on a plan to end the war, a plan promoted by Kyiv to ensure a “just peace.”.
Zelensky told reporters: “Our delegation will be in the United States, and the Americans are waiting for its arrival. I don’t know who else might be there, perhaps there will be a number of Europeans,” suggesting possible transatlantic coordination to unify visions on the shape of the final settlement.
The importance of security guarantees in the international context
The issue of security guarantees is of paramount importance in the current conflict, as Ukraine views them as a temporary alternative or precursor to its membership in NATO. Through these guarantees, Kyiv seeks to secure sustained military support, intelligence sharing, and immediate sanctions against Russia should it violate any future peace agreement.
Observers believe that Zelensky's insistence on knowing the exact details stems from Ukraine's desire to avoid fragile agreements that do not provide a real deterrent to Moscow, especially in light of international political tensions and changes in administrations that may affect the continuation of Western support.
