The declaration of artificial intelligence will boost digital transformation in the Kingdom

Engineer Waleed bin Ibrahim Al-Dughaith, Director General of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture branch in the Makkah region, affirmed that designating 2026 as the Year of Artificial Intelligence reflects an ambitious strategic direction to enhance digital transformation and support innovation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He explained that this wise approach is part of the ongoing national efforts to adopt the latest global technologies, which directly contributes to raising the efficiency of government performance and improving the quality of services provided to citizens and residents, ultimately achieving the comprehensive goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
Strategic context towards digital technology leadership
Historically, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has made rapid strides in building a robust digital infrastructure, launching numerous national initiatives and strategies, most notably the National Strategy for Data and Artificial Intelligence. The launch of this Year of Technology is the culmination of these ongoing efforts, which began with the launch of Vision 2030, establishing digital transformation as a cornerstone of sustainable development. The wise leadership recognized early on the importance of data as the new oil of the future and modern technologies as a fundamental driver of the knowledge economy, enabling Saudi Arabia to achieve leading positions in global indicators of digital readiness and technological innovation.
Harnessing modern technologies to protect natural resources
In a related context, Al-Dughaith pointed out that the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture is keeping pace with this digital transformation through practical and tangible steps, by harnessing advanced technologies to protect natural resources and ensure their sustainability. This is evident in the launch of its pioneering smart programs such as Hayat, Saqr, and Hafez. In addition, the Ministry has launched innovative digital initiatives, most notably advanced monitoring platforms for water sources, animal health, slaughterhouses, and public markets. A specialized center for developing national capabilities has also been established, enhancing the efficiency of environmental, water, and agricultural work and ensuring the provision of proactive and effective services to beneficiaries.
The expected impact of declaring the Year of Artificial Intelligence locally and internationally
The activation of the Year of Artificial Intelligence will not only improve the internal operations of ministries, but will also have a broad and positive impact at the local, regional, and international levels. Locally, it will contribute to creating quality job opportunities for Saudi youth in advanced technology fields and increase non-oil GDP. Regionally, it will enhance the Kingdom's position as a leading center for innovation and technology in the Middle East. Internationally, this initiative underscores Saudi Arabia's commitment to actively participating in shaping the future of global technology and developing solutions that serve humanity, particularly in addressing pressing global challenges such as climate change, food security, and water scarcity.
A sustainable future with a comprehensive technological vision
Engineer Al-Dughaith concluded his statement by emphasizing that the environment, water, and agriculture sector is among the most vital sectors benefiting from these advanced technologies. They contribute significantly to developing precise environmental monitoring mechanisms, managing water resources with high efficiency, and enhancing agricultural sustainability. He noted the Ministry's adoption of smart solutions and the development of young national talent to improve overall performance. He also stressed that this national declaration represents a golden opportunity to strengthen strategic partnerships with the public and private sectors, support innovation, and drive comprehensive and sustainable development across the nation.
