The Yalamlam Miqat Tree Planting Initiative aims to enhance the environment for pilgrims

In a pioneering step towards achieving environmental sustainability, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture office in Al-Lith Governorate launched a unique initiative to plant trees at the Yalamlam Miqat, with over 1,500 seedlings already planted. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to enhance vegetation cover and improve the overall environmental landscape of the region, positively impacting the comfort of pilgrims and providing them with a healthier and cleaner environment.
The historical and environmental importance of the Miqat Yalamlam afforestation project
The Miqat of Yalamlam, historically known as “Al-Sa’diyah,” is one of the five designated Miqats established by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for pilgrims and Umrah performers coming from Yemen and southern Saudi Arabia to enter into the state of Ihram. Located in the Al-Lith Governorate, this strategic Miqat witnesses a massive influx of pilgrims annually. Hence, the vital importance of the Yalamlam Miqat afforestation project lies in its ability to combine the preservation of a place of historical and religious significance with addressing contemporary environmental needs. Planting trees in this vital area not only beautifies the site but also provides shaded spaces that mitigate the intense heat of the sun, offering pilgrims a healthier and more comfortable environment before commencing their rituals.
Local and regional impact of increasing green spaces
This environmental project has dimensions and impacts that extend beyond the local level to regional and international levels. Locally, increasing green spaces in Al-Lith Governorate contributes to improving air quality, reducing dust storms, and lowering surface temperatures, thus enhancing the quality of life for both residents and visitors. Regionally and internationally, this initiative aligns closely with the objectives of the "Saudi Green Initiative," launched by the Kingdom to combat climate change and reduce carbon emissions. Through these practical steps, Saudi Arabia reaffirms its international commitment to protecting the planet and presents a model to be emulated in the Middle East region in the field of sustainable development and efficient natural resource management.
Integrating efforts to serve the pilgrims within the framework of Vision 2030
This exceptional initiative comes as part of the early preparations and comprehensive environmental services provided to pilgrims during the 1447 AH Hajj season. These preparations aim to provide a more suitable environment and enhance the quality of services supporting pilgrims in high-density areas. In this context, the Director of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture office in Al-Lith Governorate, Engineer Yahya bin Abdulrahman Al-Mahabi, affirmed that these efforts are an extension of the effective and fruitful partnerships between the public and private sectors. He explained that this constructive cooperation strengthens environmental and developmental initiatives and directly supports the objectives of preserving the environment and developing vegetation cover. These strategic steps are fully aligned with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, specifically the Guests of God Service Program, which seeks to enrich the religious and cultural experience of pilgrims and Umrah performers and ensure they receive the best levels of service from the moment they arrive until their safe departure.
