The start of winter in Saudi Arabia 2025: Weather forecasts and rainfall rates

The official spokesman for the National Center for Meteorology, Hussein Al-Qahtani, announced that the meteorological winter season will begin in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia tomorrow, Monday, December 1, 2025, noting that the climate indicators for this year promise a relatively stable season compared to previous years.
2025... The Year of Climate Moderation
In press statements, Al-Qahtani confirmed that 2025 is classified as a climatically moderate year, as the Kingdom's weather records showed no extreme weather phenomena or conditions outside of normal averages. Climate data recorded this year indicates general stability in all weather elements, with temperatures, rainfall amounts, and wind speeds remaining within normal ranges. This represents a positive contrast compared to previous years that witnessed sharp fluctuations.
The difference between meteorological and astronomical winter
It is worth noting, from a scientific perspective, that there is a difference between the beginning of meteorological winter and its astronomical beginning. Meteorologists rely on the annual calendar and the division of the year into four seasons based on the annual temperature cycle, making December 1st the fixed start of meteorological winter. In contrast, astronomical winter is linked to the Earth's position relative to the sun, and it usually begins with the winter solstice on December 21st or 22nd, the day with the longest night and shortest day of the year.
Rainfall forecast and affected areas
Regarding the forecast for the coming period, the official spokesperson indicated a gradual decrease in temperatures over the next few days, with continued chances of rainfall in several regions. December is historically one of the rainiest months in the Kingdom, particularly in the northern regions and parts of the northeastern region. Initial forecasts suggest that rainfall this year will be around or slightly above average, promising a good grazing season for pastures and wilderness areas.
Climate diversity and general recommendations
The Kingdom is characterized by a wide climatic diversity due to its large geographical area. The northern and central regions typically experience a significant drop in temperatures, sometimes reaching freezing point or below at the height of winter, while coastal areas, particularly along the Red Sea, maintain a more moderate and warmer climate. With the onset of the season, experts consistently advise following daily weather forecasts and early warnings issued by the National Center of Meteorology, especially for highway travelers and those who enjoy desert excursions, to ensure safety and avoid areas prone to flash floods in the event of heavy rainfall.
Al-Qahtani concluded his remarks by saying that the winter of 2025 will be generally cold but without exceptionally strong waves, with moderate and pleasant daytime weather and a noticeable drop in temperatures at night, making it a suitable season for outdoor activities, while taking the necessary precautions to protect against the cold.
