The World Health Organization praises the organization of a safe and healthy Hajj season in 1447 AH

The World Health Organization (WHO) commended the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's exceptional efforts in organizing a safe and healthy Hajj season for the year 1447 AH, expressing its deep appreciation for the integrated healthcare system provided to serve the pilgrims. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus congratulated the Kingdom on this remarkable success, which reflects the great international confidence in the ability of Saudi personnel to manage massive crowds efficiently and effectively, in accordance with the highest global health standards.
Saudi Arabia's historic leadership in organizing a safe and healthy Hajj season
Over the decades, Saudi Arabia has faced significant challenges in managing the millions of pilgrims during Hajj seasons, particularly in light of past global outbreaks of epidemics and infectious diseases. However, the Kingdom has successfully developed a unique and pioneering model known as "mass gathering medicine," where accumulated national expertise has evolved from simply managing emergency health crises to building comprehensive, proactive preventative strategies. This historic development has made Mecca and the Holy Sites a global model for implementing rigorous health protocols and ensuring the safety of millions of people who gather in one place at a specific time.
Modern technologies and advanced medical preparedness
In this context, Dr. Hanan Balkhi, Regional Director of the World Health Organization for the Eastern Mediterranean, commended the advanced medical preparedness provided by the relevant authorities in the Kingdom. This Hajj season was distinguished by the extensive use of modern health technologies, including smart robots and drones, to provide medical care and monitor the health of pilgrims throughout their spiritual journey. These innovative solutions directly contributed to facilitating access to preventive, curative, and emergency services at all locations, enabling pilgrims to perform their rituals with complete peace of mind and safety. This culminated in the Ministry of Health's announcement that the season was free of any epidemic outbreaks or public health threats.
Regional and international dimensions of the success of the health system
The significance of this achievement extends beyond the local level, with positive implications for regional and international health security. Hajj represents the largest annual human gathering in the world, and protecting pilgrims from diseases and epidemics directly translates to protecting their home countries upon their return, thus preventing the spread of cross-border infections. For his part, the Saudi Minister of Health, Fahd bin Abdulrahman Al-Jalajel, affirmed that health security during Hajj is an integral part of global health security. Al-Jalajel expressed his gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman – may God protect them – for their unwavering support of the health sector, emphasizing that the wise leadership's directives consistently place human health and safety at the forefront of its highest priorities.
