The Meteorology Department warns of moderate rain and flash floods in Asir and Abha today

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued moderate rainfall . The center explained that this weather system is not limited to rainfall alone, but also includes accompanying effects that could pose a risk to public safety, including strong surface winds, near-zero horizontal visibility, hail, flash floods in valleys and ravines, and the possibility of thunderstorms.

Affected areas and timing of the event

According to the center's report, the weather conditions are particularly concentrated in the city of Abha and the governorates of Khamis Mushait and Ahad Rafidah . The meteorological department indicated that these weather fluctuations will continue until 8:00 PM today, necessitating caution while driving or hiking, especially in open areas and elevated regions.

Weather conditions in the Kingdom

These warnings come amidst unstable weather conditions affecting most regions of Saudi Arabia, with the country experiencing moderate to heavy thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday. Such fluctuations are typical of the Kingdom's climate at this time of year, as air masses are influenced by approaching low-pressure systems, leading to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds and rainfall.

The nature of the Asir region and the impact of rainfall

Weather warnings in the Asir region are of particular importance due to its unique geography and topography. Asir is characterized by its towering mountains and deep valleys, making it highly susceptible to flash floods, even during moderate rainfall. Historically, the Asir highlands have experienced similar weather patterns, always necessitating staying away from wadis and floodplains, where water can accumulate and surge with unexpected force.

Safety guidelines and ongoing monitoring

The National Center of Meteorology urged all citizens and residents to follow the latest reports and warnings issued through its official channels, including its website, the "Anwaa" app, and social media accounts. Relevant authorities, such as the Civil Defense, also stressed the importance of adhering to instructions and avoiding crossing wadis (valleys) while they are flowing, in order to protect lives and property, given the continued likelihood of rainfall and rapidly changing weather conditions.
