Today's weather forecast in Saudi Arabia: Thunderstorms and winds

The National Center for Meteorology issued its detailed weather report for Thursday across various regions of Saudi Arabia, warning of weather fluctuations that require attention. These forecasts are part of the center's ongoing monitoring efforts to ensure the safety of citizens and residents, as data indicates continued chances of rainfall and dust storms in several parts of the country.
Thunderstorms and wind activity are expected
The report indicated that there remains a chance of thunderstorms of varying intensity over parts of the highlands of Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, and Makkah regions. Meanwhile, active winds stirring up dust and sand, which may reduce horizontal visibility, will continue to affect parts of these regions, as well as parts of Al-Jawf and the Northern Borders regions. These conditions necessitate caution, especially for those traveling on highways in these areas.
Fluctuating climate: A prominent feature of the Kingdom's weather during transitional periods
Historically, Saudi Arabia is known for its great geographical and climatic diversity. During the transitional periods between seasons, the climate experiences sharp weather fluctuations, characterized by the formation of rain-bearing thunderstorms over the southwestern and western highlands, resulting from the influx of tropical moisture. Conversely, surface winds that stir up dust are active in the northern, eastern, and central regions due to differences in atmospheric pressure. These typical weather patterns necessitate an accurate early warning system, which the National Center of Meteorology provides daily to mitigate potential risks.
The impact of today's weather on daily life and the local economy
Monitoring today's weather is not just a passing observation; it has a direct and significant impact both locally and regionally. Locally, dust and reduced visibility affect traffic and road safety, necessitating continuous guidance from the General Directorate of Traffic to prevent accidents. Sea conditions also impact maritime navigation and fishing, which in turn affects the local economy of coastal cities. Regionally, accurate weather forecasts contribute to ensuring safe flight paths for civil aviation and avoiding turbulence caused by thunderstorms, thus enhancing air transport safety in the region.
Navigation conditions in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf
Regarding the Red Sea, the report indicated that surface winds would be northwesterly to northerly at speeds ranging from 15 to 40 km/h in the northern and central parts, and northwesterly to westerly at speeds of 10 to 30 km/h in the southern part. Wave heights would range from half a meter to one and a half meters, resulting in a slight to moderate sea state.
In the Arabian Gulf, surface winds will be northerly to northwesterly in the northern and central parts, and northwesterly to southwesterly in the southern part, with speeds ranging from 12 to 35 km/h, occasionally reaching 48 km/h in the central and southern parts. Wave heights will range from half a meter to one and a half meters, and may reach two and a half meters, resulting in sea conditions that are slight to moderate, becoming occasionally rough.
Dust storm alerts in the Eastern Province
In a related development, the National Center for Meteorology issued a warning about dust storms affecting parts of the Eastern Province. This warning remains in effect until 1:00 PM. The affected areas include the governorates of Khafji, Nairyah, Qaryat Al-Ulya, and Hafr Al-Batin. This weather pattern will cause a significant decrease in horizontal visibility, with visibility expected to drop to between 3 and 5 kilometers. Drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution while driving.
