Today's weather in Saudi Arabia: Rain, fog, and weather warnings

The National Center for Meteorology revealed in its daily report details of the weather conditions on Monday in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, indicating weather fluctuations ranging from chances of rainfall to the formation of dense fog that may affect horizontal visibility in several vital areas.
Rain and thunderstorm forecast
The report indicated that the sky will be partly to mostly cloudy across most of the Kingdom, with a chance of light rain. This rainy weather pattern is particularly concentrated over parts of the southwestern highlands . This forecast is consistent with the geographical nature of these mountainous regions, which often experience the formation of cumulonimbus clouds due to their high elevation and moist air currents.
Warnings of fog and reduced visibility
In a related context, the center issued an important alert for drivers and highway users, as fog is expected to continue forming over large parts of three main regions:
- Riyadh region.
- Eastern Province.
- Northern Border Region.
Fog is a characteristic feature of the central, eastern, and northern regions at this time of year, as high humidity and low minimum temperatures during the night and early morning hours contribute to fog formation, requiring caution while driving.
Climate diversity in the Kingdom
These forecasts reflect the great climatic diversity of Saudi Arabia. While the southwestern highlands (such as Asir, Al-Baha, and Jazan) experience cloudy and rainy weather due to their mountainous terrain and exposure to seasonal low-pressure systems, the central and eastern regions face different phenomena such as fog and dust storms. This variation underscores the importance of following daily weather forecasts, especially for intercity travelers, to ensure public safety and avoid traffic accidents caused by weather fluctuations.
State of the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf
Regarding the marine conditions, the center provided a detailed breakdown of wave and wind movements:
Red Sea
- Surface winds will be northeasterly to northerly at speeds of 10-28 km/h in the northern and central parts, shifting to southeasterly to easterly at speeds of 20-40 km/h in the southern part, and potentially reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h towards the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, indicating strong wind activity in this vital shipping lane.
- Wave height: It ranges from half a meter to one meter in the north and center, and rises from one meter to two meters in the south, and may exceed two meters towards Bab al-Mandab.
- Sea conditions: Light waves in the north and center, and moderate to rough in the south.
Arabian Gulf
- Surface winds: Northeasterly to Northwesterly at a speed of 16-36 km/h.
- Wave height: ranging from half a meter to one and a half meters.
- Sea conditions: Light to moderate waves, making it relatively suitable for normal marine activities with the need for caution.
