The Meteorology Department warns of dust storms and strong winds in Riyadh and the Eastern Province

The National Center for Meteorology in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia issued an important warning regarding the expected weather conditions for today, indicating that large parts of the Riyadh region and the Eastern Province will be affected by weather phenomena consisting of dust storms and active winds, which calls for caution and vigilance on the part of citizens, residents and highway users.

Weather details for the Riyadh region

The weather report indicated that the weather conditions in the Riyadh region would begin at 4:00 AM and continue until 6:00 PM. These conditions include strong surface winds stirring up dust and sand, leading to near-zero horizontal visibility, with expected visibility ranging between 1 and 3 kilometers. The center identified the areas most directly affected as Al-Aflaj, As-Sulayyil, and Wadi Ad-Dawasir.

Weather effects on the Eastern region

In a related development, the National Center for Meteorology issued a warning about a similar weather system affecting the Eastern Province during the same period (from 4:00 AM to 6:00 PM). The warning covers a large number of governorates and cities, including Jubail, Khobar, Dammam, Qatif, Ras Tanura, Al-Ahsa, Al-Udayd, Abqaiq, and Hafr Al-Batin. The system is characterized by strong winds and blowing dust, which will reduce horizontal visibility and may affect land and sea navigation in coastal areas.

Climate nature and the effect of surface winds

These weather fluctuations are part of Saudi Arabia's climatic characteristics, where the arid desert environment plays a significant role in how quickly the atmosphere is affected by surface winds. When winds pick up, they stir up sand and suspended dust, creating what is known as "blowing dust," a phenomenon distinct from severe sandstorms but sufficient to reduce visibility and disrupt traffic, especially in open areas and on highways connecting cities.

Safety and prevention guidelines

Given these circumstances, it is crucial to adhere to public safety guidelines issued by relevant authorities such as the General Directorate of Civil Defense and the Traffic Department. Drivers are advised to exercise caution, reduce speed, use headlights and side lights to enhance visibility for other vehicles, and maintain a safe following distance. Health experts also emphasize the importance of avoiding direct exposure to dust, especially for those with respiratory conditions, asthma, and allergies. They recommend wearing masks when going out when necessary and keeping windows tightly closed at home to prevent dust from entering.
