Washington warns its citizens in Iran and hints at military options

In a significant development reflecting escalating tensions in US-Iranian relations, the United States issued an urgent and explicit call for dual US-Iranian citizens to leave Iran immediately. According to Al Arabiya, citing sources in the US State Department, Washington advised its citizens to use available land crossings through Armenia or Turkey for safe departure, given the limited direct flight options and potential risks.
Pressure strategy: between diplomacy and military posturing
These renewed warnings coincide with statements from the White House outlining President Donald Trump's policy toward Tehran. White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt confirmed that President Trump is adopting a strategy of "keeping all options on the table," indicating that military action and airstrikes remain among several options available to the Commander-in-Chief for dealing with Tehran, particularly in light of the Iranian authorities' crackdown on popular protests.
Levitt added in her remarks to reporters that "diplomacy always remains the president's first choice," revealing a discrepancy between the Iranian regime's declared hostile rhetoric and the messages the US administration receives through back channels, indicating Washington's desire to explore opportunities for de-escalation despite the verbal escalation.
Context of tension and risks for dual nationals
This appeal is particularly significant given the long and complex history of dual nationals being detained in Iran. Since the severing of diplomatic relations between the two countries more than four decades ago, numerous Iranian-American citizens have faced charges of espionage or acting against national security, and are often used as bargaining chips in political negotiations. Because Iran does not recognize dual nationality, these individuals are denied the usual consular protections. While the Swiss embassy represents US interests in Tehran, its authority is very limited.
Regional and international dimensions
Washington's designation of Armenia and Turkey as departure routes carries geopolitical significance, as these countries represent the most relatively stable land routes for Americans wishing to leave, given the potential tensions in air and sea corridors in the Arabian Gulf. This warning reflects growing American concern about the possibility of a sudden deterioration in the security situation, whether due to internal unrest in Iran or any potential military escalation in the region, making the safety of American citizens a top priority for the current administration.
