Al-Ula Art Valley: An open-air museum that tells the story of the land and creativity

The “Valley of Art” project in AlUla is one of the most ambitious cultural projects in the region and the world, currently transforming vast expanses of stunning desert into a permanent contemporary art destination. The project aims to create a unique visual and intellectual dialogue between ancient geological formations and modern artworks, further solidifying AlUla’s position as a global center for arts and heritage.

A field tour to explore the future

In a move aimed at showcasing the project's phases and long-term strategic vision, the organizers of "Art Valley" arranged a field tour for a select group of arts and culture experts, along with a media delegation. During the tour, participants explored the natural sites designated to house the artworks, which will be transformed in the coming years into an open-air museum spanning approximately 65 square kilometers, offering an exceptional experience amidst nature.

Al-Ula: From ancient civilizations to contemporary art

Art is not foreign to AlUla; this region boasts a historical heritage spanning thousands of years, having been home to the Dadanite, Lihyanite, and Nabataean civilizations. Its mountains are adorned with rock carvings and ancient art that document human life throughout the ages. Today, the “Valley of Art” project completes this historical narrative, linking the creativity of ancient people with the vision of the contemporary artist, thus making AlUla a cultural meeting point that transcends the boundaries of time and place.

The philosophy of "Valley of Art": A dialogue between land and creativity

The project is based on a contemporary approach known as “Land Art,” where artworks are designed to harmonize with the valley’s topography without compromising its pristine nature. This philosophy is grounded in the principles of sustainability and respect for the environment, ensuring that the artworks are not merely additions but integral parts of the natural landscape. International and regional artists are slated to participate in this project, creating monumental works that draw their materials and themes from AlUla’s geology and human history.

A global cultural destination within the framework of Vision 2030

The “Valley of Art” is part of the “Journey Through Time” initiative launched by the Royal Commission for AlUla, in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. The project aims to diversify the economy through cultural tourism and attract art enthusiasts from around the world. Although the site is still under development and not yet open to visitors, it is expected to have a significant impact on the international art scene, reinforcing the Kingdom’s role as a hub for creativity and cultural innovation.
