Urban Beauty Cities Initiative: 4,700 students beautify the Kingdom's cities

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia witnessed a remarkable launch of the Urban Beautification Cities initiative, with widespread volunteer participation exceeding 4,700 male and female students from public schools. This pioneering national initiative, implemented in cooperation with 10 municipalities across various regions, aims to improve the urban landscape and enhance the visual environment of Saudi cities, in line with the objectives of the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing to promote quality of life and activate volunteer work as a fundamental pillar of sustainable community development.
Saudi Vision 2030 and the shift towards sustainable volunteer work
The launch of this initiative comes within the context of the major developmental transformations that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has witnessed since the launch of Vision 2030. Volunteer work and the development of the third sector have long been among the strategic objectives of the Vision, with the Kingdom aspiring to reach one million volunteers by the end of this decade. Historically, efforts to improve the urban landscape have gone through several phases, starting with individual municipal campaigns and culminating today in major institutional partnerships that bring together the municipal, banking, and education sectors. This tripartite integration ensures the sustainability of community initiatives and transforms volunteer work from a temporary activity into an ingrained culture among younger generations, contributing to building responsible citizenship that is aware of the importance of preserving national achievements and public facilities.
Comprehensive geographical distribution and ambitious targets for the initiative
The completed phase of the initiative has seen the active participation of 4,706 volunteers across 10 key municipalities: Hail, Madinah, Jeddah, Taif, Najran, Al-Baha, Dammam, Al-Ahsa, Tabuk, and Jazan. The initiative's efforts don't stop there; it is preparing to expand its fieldwork in the coming period to include seven additional municipalities: the Northern Borders, Riyadh, Qassim, Hafr Al-Batin, Al-Jawf, Makkah, and Asir. This will bring the initiative's total coverage to 17 municipalities across the Kingdom. The initiative aims to engage more than 10,000 volunteers during its two phases, spanning the first and second semesters, with each volunteer contributing an average of five hours. This translates to over 50,000 volunteer hours dedicated directly to serving municipal facilities, schools, and public spaces.
The expected impact of the Urban Beauty Cities initiative and its field routes
The Urban Beautification Cities Initiative is based on three carefully designed pillars to bring about tangible change in the urban environment: traffic safety, afforestation, and street art. The afforestation pillar directly contributes to increasing green spaces and reducing temperatures in cities, aligning with the Saudi Green Initiative. The street art pillar addresses visual pollution and transforms blank walls into artistic canvases that reflect the Kingdom's cultural identity. Locally, this translates into improved mental and physical health for residents by providing safe walking environments and aesthetically pleasing views. Regionally and internationally, these efforts enhance the ranking of Saudi cities in global livability indices, attracting investment and tourism and supporting a diversified and environmentally sustainable national economy.
