Kalghith Initiative: Umm Al-Qura University distributes 900 breakfast meals in Makkah

In a humanitarian gesture embodying the spirit of giving and solidarity during the holy month of Ramadan, Umm Al-Qura University in Mecca organized a volunteer initiative called “Like Rain,” which aimed to distribute 900 complete Iftar meals to needy families in various neighborhoods of Mecca. This initiative, implemented in cooperation with the “Where Humanity Is” group, seeks to promote the values of social responsibility and reinforce the principles of compassion encouraged by Islam, especially during this blessed month.
Background of the initiative and its Ramadan context
Charitable work in Saudi Arabia, particularly in Mecca, takes on special significance during Ramadan. This month is not only a time for fasting and worship, but also a season of giving, generosity, and connecting with the less fortunate in society. Initiatives to provide iftar meals are an integral part of Saudi culture, deeply rooted in Islamic teachings. Governmental, private, and non-profit organizations compete to offer support and assistance, creating a strong social fabric based on solidarity and cooperation.
Integrated efforts to achieve a tangible impact
The university's Vice President for Business Development and Community Partnership, Professor Dr. Warda Al-Asmari, explained that the initiative was launched under the supervision of the university's Volunteer Work Department, emphasizing the academic institution's commitment to providing high-quality services that address the needs of the Makkah community. The initiative witnessed remarkable collaboration from 900 male and female volunteers from among the university's staff and students, who undertook the tasks of preparing and packaging the meals according to the highest standards of quality and food safety. The meals were then transported via dedicated buses to pre-determined distribution points to ensure their timely delivery to those in need before sunset.
Alignment with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030
The “Kalghith” initiative is a proactive step that aligns directly with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 , which places great emphasis on developing the volunteer sector and increasing the number of volunteers. By engaging students in such field activities, the university not only contributes to community service but also refines its students' skills and strengthens their sense of belonging and active citizenship. These initiatives transform universities from mere academic institutions into community-oriented centers that effectively contribute to achieving sustainable development.
Importance and expected impact
Locally, the initiative helps alleviate the financial burden on needy families and brings joy to their hearts during the holy month. Nationally, it represents a model of effective partnership between academic institutions and the non-profit sector to serve the community. Internationally, these efforts reflect the bright image of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a leading nation in humanitarian and charitable work, especially as they originate from the holiest place on earth, Mecca, the Qibla of Muslims and the focus of their hearts.
The event was not limited to the relief aspect, but concluded with an enriching tour for the participants in the university's cultural center, with the aim of linking the field work with the intellectual and cultural depth embraced by this prestigious scientific institution, thus adding an educational and cultural dimension to the volunteer experience.
