Trump moves warships toward Iran and warns Britain about China

US President Donald Trump confirmed on Thursday that a group of US warships is currently en route to the Middle East region, specifically towards Iran, while expressing his strong hope that it will not be necessary to use this enormous military force, and leaving the door open to the possibility of new diplomatic negotiations with Tehran.

Trump's remarks to reporters came during the premiere of a documentary about his wife Melania, where he said in a tone that blended threat and diplomacy: "I built up and strengthened the military during my first term, and now we have a group of very large and powerful warships sailing toward a place called Iran, and it would be really great if we didn't have to use them.".

Context of US-Iranian tensions

These military moves come against the backdrop of a long history of tension between Washington and Tehran, particularly after the United States, under former President Trump, withdrew from the nuclear agreement (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) in 2018 and reimposed crippling economic sanctions under a "maximum pressure" strategy. These moves are typically aimed at deterring any potential threats to US interests or those of its allies in the region, as well as securing vital waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world's oil supply passes.

The door is open for negotiations

Despite the military buildup, Trump did not rule out diplomatic solutions, indicating the possibility of talks with the Islamic Republic regarding a new nuclear agreement that would address the shortcomings he sees in the previous deal. Commenting on the possibility of dialogue, he added, "I've done it before and I plan to do it again. Yes, we have tremendous military power on the way, but we still hope to avoid a confrontation." Observers believe this approach aligns with Trump's "peace through strength" policy, where he uses the threat of military force to compel adversaries to the negotiating table.

Warning to Britain regarding China

In a separate foreign policy matter, Trump issued a stark warning to the United Kingdom regarding its relationship with China. This warning came in response to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's visit to Beijing and his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

When asked to comment on Britain's efforts to strengthen its trade ties with China, Trump said, "It's very dangerous for them to do that." This statement reflects ongoing American concerns about China's growing influence and Washington's desire to unite its Western allies in adopting a tougher stance toward Beijing, both on economic and security issues.
