In a pioneering step towards fostering tourism and cultural innovation, Umm Al-Qura University launched the Historical and Heritage Sites Development Camp , the fourth phase of a hackathon dedicated to developing innovative technological and engineering solutions that serve Islamic and national heritage. The roots of interest in heritage: The Kingdom's journey towards reviving the past

Historically, Mecca and Medina have always been the beating heart of the Islamic world, home to historical sites that tell profound stories from the Prophet's life and Islamic history. For decades, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has made concerted efforts to preserve this great heritage, from the historic expansions of the Two Holy Mosques to the care of the surrounding archaeological sites. In the modern era, with rapid technological advancements, the need has become paramount to integrate modern technology with the richness of the past, facilitating visitor access to these landmarks and enabling a deeper understanding of their profound historical significance. It is from this context that the idea of technology hackathons emerged as a natural continuation of the Kingdom's approach to serving pilgrims and developing its cultural infrastructure.

Specialized workshops to support innovation in the historical sites development camp

This camp is a strategic extension of the hackathon, which brings together a select group of innovators and creators from around the world. Its primary aim is to develop high-quality solutions that contribute to highlighting heritage sites and enhancing their cultural and touristic. The event provides a comprehensive interactive environment combining training and mentorship through workshops and guidance sessions led by experts in engineering, computer science, and social sciences. In its third year, the hackathon witnessed wide participation from over 300 contestants representing 10 Saudi regions, in addition to participants from 35 countries worldwide. Twenty-five teams successfully qualified for the semi-final stage, while eight promising projects are competing in the final stage to present innovative solutions that serve Makkah and Madinah.

Strategic impact: Local and international dimensions for promoting cultural tourism

The impact of these initiatives extends beyond the purely technical realm, encompassing significant strategic dimensions at the local, regional, and international levels. Locally, the camp contributes to empowering Saudi youth, supporting entrepreneurship, and creating new investment opportunities in the cultural tourism sector, positively impacting the national economy. Regionally and internationally, the development of these sites enriches the experience of the millions of Muslims who flock annually to perform Hajj and Umrah, solidifying the Kingdom's position as a leading global tourism and cultural destination. These efforts are fully aligned with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to host 30 million Umrah pilgrims by 2030 and provide an unforgettable spiritual and cultural experience for the guests of God, reflecting Saudi hospitality and a deep connection to Islamic history.
