Tips for protecting children from the dangers of rain and floods | Medical guidelines

Various regions of Saudi Arabia experience weather fluctuations during the rainy season that necessitate caution. While rainy weather often becomes a source of joy and encourages outings, this joy can turn into real tragedies if awareness of potential dangers is lacking. In this context, Dr. Khalid Obaid Bawaked, a consultant in family, community, and allergy medicine, emphasized the need to raise public awareness about the risks of rainwater and flash floods that can result from such weather conditions.

Hidden dangers beneath water bodies

Dr. Bawaked explained that while rain is generally a blessing, it can pose a direct threat to life, especially for children, if public safety guidelines are not followed. He pointed out that some of the most significant dangers, which many may not be aware of, include deep, hidden potholes covered by water, as well as exposed electrical wires or poles that may short-circuit due to wet conditions, potentially leading to serious and fatal electrocution. He urged parents to strictly warn their children to stay away from standing water and to avoid approaching lampposts or electrical transformers in the streets under any circumstances.

Health and behavioral risks

On the other hand, the consultant pointed out that playing in rainwater is extremely dangerous, not only because of the risk of drowning or being swept away by unpredictable and unstable currents, but also because of the environmental pollutants and bacteria that this water may carry, which can cause skin or respiratory illnesses, especially for those with allergies or weakened immune systems. He emphasized that many unfortunate incidents begin with moments of childish curiosity or reckless disregard for the consequences, stressing the importance of keeping children indoors during heavy rainfall.

The importance of integrating family guidance with official warnings

In connection with these weather events, this medical advice aligns with the efforts of relevant authorities in the Kingdom, such as Civil Defense and the Meteorology Department, to ensure the safety of citizens and residents. Dr. Bawaked added, "If it is necessary to be outside the home, you must strictly adhere to the instructions of the competent authorities, immediately head to higher and safer ground, and stay completely away from floodplains and valleys, no matter how safe and calm the situation may seem.".

Shared responsibility and family oversight

Dr. Bawaked concluded his remarks by highlighting a crucial point often overlooked: the necessity of close supervision of children and never leaving them unattended during or immediately after rainfall. Children's desire to go out and explore increases during these times, making parental guidance essential for minimizing accidents. He urged families to teach their children how to react in emergency situations and the importance of seeking help immediately if they feel threatened, emphasizing that safety is a shared responsibility that begins with family awareness and extends to the entire community.
