The top 3 causes of traffic accidents in the Northern Borders region in 2024

The General Directorate of Traffic in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia revealed a recent and important statistic related to the level of road safety, highlighting the three main causes of traffic accidents that were observed in the Northern Borders region during 2024. This announcement comes within the framework of transparency and intensive awareness efforts made by security authorities to reduce accidents and protect lives and public and private property.
The administration explained in its statement that the list was topped by the behavior of “drivers using mobile devices while driving,” which is globally considered one of the most dangerous distractions that cause drivers to lose focus and lead to disasters in fractions of a second. The second most common distraction was “right-of-way violations,” highlighting the need to promote a culture of defensive driving and respect for the rights of other road users to ensure safe traffic flow. The third most common cause was “sudden swerving,” which often results from speeding or neglecting to use turn signals, surprising other drivers and causing violent collisions.
Against this historical backdrop and in light of national efforts, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has witnessed a radical transformation in its traffic safety system since the launch of Vision 2030. The Ministry of Interior, represented by the General Directorate of Traffic, has implemented stringent regulations and advanced automated monitoring technologies, contributing to a record reduction in traffic fatalities and injuries over the past five years. These regional statistics are part of a comprehensive strategy to analyze the causes of accidents in each region individually, based on its geographical characteristics and driver behavior.
This data is particularly important for the Northern Borders region, which is characterized by its long highways connecting cities and provinces. In these areas, sudden swerving or using a mobile phone while driving is especially dangerous due to the high speed limits. This precise identification of the causes is expected to contribute to more effective inspection and awareness campaigns, which will positively impact the reduction of accidents in the region. This, in turn, will support the national traffic safety index and alleviate the economic and social burdens borne by the state and society as a result of accidents.
In closing, the General Directorate of Traffic reiterated its call to all drivers in the Northern Borders region and throughout the Kingdom to fully comply with traffic laws and regulations. It emphasized that traffic safety is a shared responsibility that begins with driver awareness, stressing that refraining from using mobile phones, yielding the right-of-way, and avoiding sudden swerving are simple steps that can save lives.
