Key tips for cancer patients on the Day of Arafah for a safe Hajj

Dr. Hadeer Mustafa Mir, a consultant in radiation oncology, emphasized the importance of adhering to health and preventative guidelines, offering a set of key tips for cancer patients on the Day of Arafah and for those recovering from the disease who are performing Hajj this year (1447 AH). This guidance coincides with preparations for standing on the sacred plain of Arafat, considered one of the greatest days of a lifetime and the most physically demanding and crowded day of Hajj. She stressed that maintaining good health does not conflict with performing the rituals; rather, it helps pilgrims complete them with complete peace of mind and safety.
The importance of healthcare and providing advice to cancer patients on the Day of Arafah
Historically, standing at Arafat is the most important pillar of Hajj, as the eyes of the Muslim world turn towards the holy sites. With the increasing number of pilgrims each year, the importance of developing a comprehensive system of community medicine and crowd management has become paramount—a field in which the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has achieved international and regional leadership. Providing specialized care and precise guidance to those most vulnerable to health risks, such as cancer patients, reflects the significant positive impact of local health efforts on a global scale. These measures not only ensure the safety of individual pilgrims but also contribute to the stability of public health and prevent the outbreak of health crises among millions of visitors. Therefore, implementing these guidelines is an integral part of the success of the Hajj season.

Stay well-hydrated and avoid heat stress
Dr. Mir explained to Al-Youm that cancer patients performing Hajj this year should pay close attention to managing their physical exertion during the Day of Arafah, especially given the high temperatures and long periods spent in the holy sites. Each patient's health condition varies depending on the type of cancer, the stage of treatment, and the stability of their health. He added that one of the most important recommendations is to avoid prolonged direct sun exposure and to stay in shaded or air-conditioned areas whenever possible. He also pointed out that maintaining good hydration is crucial, by drinking plenty of water and fluids regularly to prevent dehydration, in addition to eating light, balanced meals to maintain energy levels, while avoiding unsafe foods.
Medication management and adherence to the treatment plan
The consultant explained that among the most important precautions to take are carrying essential medications in an easily accessible bag, strictly adhering to their prescribed schedules, and never stopping any treatment without consulting a doctor. In addition, it is crucial to keep a brief medical report detailing the patient's condition and the medications they are taking, in case of any emergency. Adherence to the treatment plan prescribed by the treating physician is essential and cannot be compromised to ensure the patient's stability.
Preventive measures for recovered patients and immunocompromised patients
Dr. Mir emphasized the importance of adhering to preventive measures, especially for patients with weakened immune systems or fatigue resulting from chemotherapy or radiation therapy. He recommended wearing medical masks in crowded places, maintaining personal hygiene, and frequently washing hands or using sanitizers to avoid respiratory infections. Regarding cancer survivors, he said that their stable health does not mean they should neglect precautions. They are advised to avoid excessive exertion while standing on Mount Arafat and to regulate their movement and rest according to their physical capabilities.
He also explained that those recovering from illness should take advantage of the spiritual significance of the Day of Arafah while remaining mindful of their health. This includes avoiding overcrowding, taking adequate rest periods, and not hesitating to seek medical help if they experience any unusual symptoms such as dizziness, extreme fatigue, or shortness of breath. He concluded by saying, “The ultimate goal is to perform the rituals with ease and safety. I urge all patients and those recovering not to overexert themselves, to enjoy the profound spiritual atmosphere, and to adhere to medical advice that preserves their health and enables them to complete their Hajj safely.”.
