879 customs smuggling cases thwarted: Drugs and weapons seized in the Kingdom

Saudi Arabia's land, sea, and air ports of entry achieved a significant security milestone, with the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) thwarting 879 smuggling involving contraband in just one week. This achievement reflects the Authority's ongoing efforts and high level of vigilance to enhance security and protect Saudi society from the scourge of contraband in all its forms, demonstrating the efficiency of the security and customs system in confronting anyone who dares to threaten the nation's security.

Details of the largest customs smuggling operations involving drugs and weapons

The items seized during these targeted operations included 71 types of highly dangerous narcotics, such as hashish, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, Captagon pills, and other drugs that target the minds of young people. In addition, 364 types of prohibited substances were confiscated. Customs authorities also thwarted 1,915 attempts to smuggle tobacco and its derivatives, along with five types of illicitly smuggled cash and three types of weapons and related equipment. This underscores the comprehensiveness and precision of customs oversight in detecting all violations.

The historical context of the Kingdom's efforts to protect its borders

Historically, Saudi Arabia has faced geographical challenges due to its vast size and extensive borders with several countries, making it a target for international smuggling networks. Over the decades, the Kingdom has radically developed its security and customs strategies, moving from traditional manual inspections to the use of cutting-edge global technologies such as advanced X-ray machines, trained sniffer dogs, and artificial intelligence systems for data and risk analysis. These rapid advancements have made Saudi customs a formidable barrier against organized crime gangs and have significantly reduced the amount of contraband entering the country compared to previous years.

The strategic impact of thwarting illicit activities locally and regionally

The impact of thwarting these massive drug seizures extends beyond Saudi Arabia's borders, impacting the stability of the entire region. Domestically, these seizures contribute to protecting the national economy from money laundering and illicit trade, and safeguard public health from the catastrophic effects of drugs, which drain human and medical resources. Regionally and internationally, the vigilance of Saudi Customs disrupts supply lines for transnational criminal networks, reinforcing the Kingdom's position as a global strategic partner in combating terrorism and drug trafficking, and supporting international efforts to cut off funding sources for organized crime.

Strict oversight and effective community partnership

ZATCA affirmed its commitment to rigorously tightening customs controls on all imports and exports within the Kingdom to ensure the security and protection of society, through continuous cooperation and coordination with all relevant partners. The Authority also called upon all citizens and residents to contribute to combating smuggling to protect society and the national economy by contacting them via the dedicated security reporting hotline (1910), email ([email protected]), or the international number (009661910).

Through these trusted channels, the Authority receives reports related to smuggling crimes and violations of the provisions of the Unified Customs System, with complete confidentiality that ensures the protection of the identity of the informants, while granting a generous financial reward to the informant if the information in the report is proven to be true, which enhances the spirit of social responsibility and makes the citizen and resident the first line of defense.
