Thursday's weather forecast for Saudi Arabia: Thunderstorms and strong winds

The National Center for Meteorology has revealed details of the expected weather conditions across Saudi Arabia on Thursday. The center issued important alerts to citizens and residents regarding significant weather fluctuations, including strong winds and dust storms, as well as thunderstorms of varying intensity in several regions, urging caution while traveling.
Thursday's weather map: Meteorological warnings for affected areas
The meteorological statement indicated that forecasts point to a significant increase in high-speed surface winds, which will stir up dust and sand. This activity may lead to the formation of sandstorms causing near-zero horizontal visibility across large parts of the Eastern Province, the Northern Borders region, Al-Jawf, Tabuk, Hail, Al-Qassim, Riyadh, Madinah, and Makkah. Thunderstorms of moderate to heavy intensity are also expected to continue, potentially causing flash floods in valleys and ravines, accompanied by hail in parts of these regions. These storms are also expected to extend to parts of Al-Baha, Asir, Jazan, and Najran.
Climatic context: The nature of weather fluctuations in the Arabian Peninsula
To understand these changes, it is necessary to consider the overall context and historical climate of the Arabian Peninsula. Saudi Arabia experiences transitional periods between seasons, where cold air masses from the north meet warm, humid air masses from the south. Historically, these periods are characterized by frequent and rapid weather fluctuations, with sandstorms and heavy thunderstorms being prominent features. The National Center of Meteorology continuously studies these recurring weather patterns and updates its early warning systems to mitigate associated risks, reflecting the significant advancements in the Kingdom's meteorological monitoring system to ensure the safety of lives and property.
Expected impacts of the weather conditions at the local and regional levels
These weather changes are of great importance and have multifaceted effects. Locally, the heavy rainfall contributes to replenishing groundwater and raising dam levels, positively impacting the agricultural sector and vegetation cover in the Kingdom. However, the strong winds and sandstorms pose significant challenges to land and air transport, causing delays to some flights and slowing traffic on regional highways connecting the Kingdom's cities with neighboring countries. Furthermore, the dust storms affect public health, particularly for those with respiratory conditions and asthma, prompting health authorities to raise their level of preparedness and provide the necessary preventative guidelines to the public to navigate this situation safely.
Navigation conditions in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf
Regarding the maritime conditions and the impact of the weather on navigation, the report detailed the forecasts as follows:
- Red Sea: Surface winds will be southwesterly to northwesterly in the northern part, and southeasterly to southwesterly in the central and southern parts, with speeds ranging from 22 to 45 km/h, potentially reaching 60 km/h with the formation of thunderstorms and rain. Wave heights will range from one to two meters, and may exceed three meters in areas of thunderstorms, resulting in sea conditions ranging from slight to moderate, becoming rough at times.
- The Arabian Gulf: The region is experiencing northwesterly to westerly surface winds at speeds ranging from 15 to 32 km/h, reaching up to 50 km/h with thunderstorms and rain. Wave heights range from half a meter to one and a half meters, and may reach more than two and a half meters, resulting in sea conditions that are slight to moderate and occasionally rough.
