Founded in Italy in 1963, the Bologna International Book Fair is the world's most important and prestigious event for publishing children's and young adult books. This fair serves as a historic platform where cultures converge and publishers and content creators exchange their latest releases and trends. Within this rich historical context, the Kingdom's participation stands out as a strategic step reflecting the significant cultural transformation the country is undergoing as part of Saudi Vision 2030, which places great emphasis on human development and fostering cultural exchange with diverse peoples around the world through literature and translation.
Achievements of the Translate Initiative in Enriching Knowledge
During the seminar, Dr. Haila Al-Khalaf reviewed the exceptional achievements of the Tarjim Initiative since its official launch in 2021. The initiative has successfully supported the translation of more than 460 books for children and young adults. These efforts were not limited to the mere literal transfer of texts from one language to another, but rather focused deeply on building a thoughtful and aware generation. This was achieved by selecting and introducing books that enhance critical thinking and philosophical reflection skills in children, alongside works that instill noble human values, thus contributing to raising a generation capable of understanding global changes.
Bridges of cultural communication and multilingualism
One of the initiative's most significant contributions has been diversifying cultural content for Arab children by translating prestigious international works from various cultures while meticulously preserving their cultural identity. In addition, innovative interactive books have been developed to support linguistic and cognitive development in early childhood. In a move that reflects a shift in the translation trend, the initiative has also translated 53 Saudi children's stories into eight living languages, enhancing access to authentic Saudi culture for readers worldwide and supporting the strategic goal of building a rich library for Arab children by 2030 that combines the authenticity of local productions with the diversity of global content.

This cultural movement is of paramount importance and has a multifaceted impact. Locally, it contributes to creating a stimulating environment for reading and building the capabilities of emerging generations. Regionally, it enriches the Arabic library with high-quality content that bridges the gap in Arabic children's literature. Internationally, it solidifies the Kingdom's position as a soft power that contributes to building bridges of dialogue and understanding between peoples. These efforts are complemented by a comprehensive national system led by the Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission, which includes pioneering programs such as "Children's Literature Week," the "Baba Taher Award," and the "Fuhman" digital platform, in addition to the initiative to deploy vending machines in public spaces. As Al-Khalaf emphasized at the conclusion of her seminar, investing in children's literature is a genuine and sustainable investment in the future. Books may not change the world on their own, but they certainly create the generation capable of bringing about this positive change.
