Anti-smoking efforts in Qassim through 50 Ramadan exhibitions

In a pioneering step reflecting the health authorities' commitment to enhancing quality of life, anti-smoking efforts in Al-Qassim continued steadily during the holy month of Ramadan 1447 AH. The Al-Qassim Health Cluster activated 50 awareness exhibitions targeting walking trails, cafes, and public parks. This initiative aims to combat the scourge of tobacco and help community members quit this harmful habit, resulting in 246 individuals being directly referred to specialized clinics to receive the necessary treatment and begin their recovery journey.
The Kingdom's journey towards a healthy, tobacco-free society
These awareness campaigns are not a spur-of-the-moment initiative, but rather an extension of comprehensive national efforts adopted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for many years to curb tobacco use. Historically, Saudi Arabia has been among the first countries to join the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and to implement strict policies, including banning smoking in public places and imposing selective taxes. In line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which prioritizes the health of citizens and residents, preventive and treatment programs have been intensified. The month of Ramadan, with its spiritual and social nature, presents a golden opportunity that health authorities are leveraging to encourage those fasting to adopt healthy lifestyles and break negative habits, making these current initiatives an integral part of a comprehensive national strategy.
Field strategies to reach target groups
The Qassim Health Cluster explained that field and health teams have been targeting high-traffic areas since the beginning of Ramadan. These visits included walking trails in public parks, youth gathering places, tea stalls, and sports viewing areas. This intensive field presence during peak Ramadan times ensures that the program's preventative message reaches the widest possible segment of the community. These intensive efforts have resulted in more than 2,500 people benefiting from the guidance messages and direct services provided by specialized medical personnel in the field.
The positive impact of anti-smoking programs in Al-Qassim at the local and regional levels
The importance of anti-smoking programs in Qassim extends far beyond simply offering advice; they have a profound and lasting impact on public health. Locally, these initiatives contribute to reducing the incidence of chronic smoking-related diseases, such as heart and respiratory illnesses, thus alleviating the economic and operational burden on the healthcare system. Regionally, the success of these field initiatives provides a model for other regions of the Kingdom and the Gulf countries on how to leverage religious and social occasions to effect positive behavioral change. The teams' success in persuading and referring hundreds of beneficiaries to specialized and accredited clinics to complete their treatment programs reflects a growing community awareness and underscores that investing in prevention is the cornerstone of building healthy generations capable of contributing to the nation's development.
