Sunday's weather in Saudi Arabia: Thunderstorms expected in 9 regions, warnings issued

The National Center for Meteorology issued its detailed daily report on Sunday's weather in Saudi Arabia, warning of unstable weather conditions affecting large areas of the Kingdom. The center predicted thunderstorms of varying intensity, ranging from moderate to heavy, accompanied by various weather phenomena including hail and strong winds that will stir up dust and sand, urging caution in the affected areas.

Climate diversity and rainy season in the Kingdom

These weather fluctuations are part of the geographical and climatic nature of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which is characterized by its vast area and diverse terrain, ranging from long coastlines to towering mountains and desert regions. The Kingdom typically experiences weather patterns at this time of year resulting from the interaction of air masses, leading to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds and rainfall, particularly over the southwestern highlands and central regions. This rainfall is an essential part of the climatic cycle, contributing to groundwater replenishment and the revitalization of vegetation in valleys and wadis.

Sunday's weather details in Saudi Arabia and affected areas

According to the meteorological statement, the chance of thunderstorms remains, potentially leading to flash floods in parts of Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, Makkah, Riyadh, and the Eastern Province. This rainy weather pattern also extends to parts of Najran, while light rain is expected in parts of Madinah and Qassim. Meanwhile, surface winds will stir up dust and sand, potentially reducing horizontal visibility in parts of the aforementioned regions, as well as parts of the Northern Borders, Al-Jawf, and the coastal areas of Tabuk. The report also indicated the possibility of fog formation during the night and early morning hours, requiring extra caution from drivers.

Environmental impacts and public safety measures

These rainfalls are of paramount importance both environmentally and locally; they represent a vital source of water reserves and support national initiatives to increase green spaces and combat desertification. However, the expected heavy rainfall and flash floods pose challenges to public safety. In such conditions, relevant authorities consistently emphasize the need to stay away from valleys and flood channels, avoid low-lying areas, and adhere to civil defense instructions to ensure the safety of lives and property, especially in areas experiencing heavy rainfall.

Sea conditions and maritime navigation

Regarding the maritime situation, the report detailed the movement of winds and waves in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf:

Red Sea

  • Surface winds: Northwesterly to northerly at a speed of 22-43 km/h, reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h with the formation of rain-bearing thunderclouds over the central and southern parts.
  • Wave height: ranging from one to two meters, and may reach two and a half meters with thunderstorms in the central and southern parts.
  • Sea conditions: Light to moderate waves, becoming rough in conjunction with rainy conditions.

Arabian Gulf

  • Surface winds: Southeasterly to southerly at a speed of 15-40 km/h, reaching up to 45 km/h with thunderstorms.
