Daylight Saving Time for the School Day in Mecca: Times and Details

The General Directorate of Education in Makkah Region officially announced the adoption of daylight saving time for the school day in all schools within the region, starting Sunday, Shawwal 17, 1447 AH. This strategic decision comes as part of the Ministry of Education's commitment to organizing school operations in accordance with the climatic changes the region experiences during the summer, and to ensure a safe and stimulating learning environment for all students.
Details and dates of daylight saving time for the school day
The Makkah Education Department clarified that the implementation of daylight saving time for the school day will involve a precise adjustment to arrival and dismissal times. It was decided that the morning assembly in all morning schools will begin at 6:45 AM, with the first class starting at 7:00 AM. This earlier start time aims to take advantage of the early morning hours, which are characterized by moderate temperatures.
As for continuing education schools, the administration indicated that the times will be flexible to suit the target groups; classes for boys will start at (5:00) pm, while for girls they will start at (3:00) pm, according to the approved schedules that take into account the needs of the students and enhance the efficiency of the educational process.
The time context for organizing school timetables in the Kingdom
Historically, the Ministry of Education in Saudi Arabia has implemented a flexible system that alternates between winter and summer time in schools. This regulatory measure dates back decades, as the relevant authorities are aware of the Kingdom's desert climate, which experiences significantly high temperatures during the summer months. Switching to daylight saving time is not merely a routine schedule change, but a well-considered response aimed at protecting our students from exposure to the intense sun during peak hours, especially during dismissal from school and return home.
The positive impact of adjusting school hours on students and society
This change carries significant importance and a positive impact that extends to the local and community levels. Locally, starting the school day earlier contributes to increased concentration and comprehension among students, as educational studies have shown that mental and physical activity is at its peak during the early morning hours. Furthermore, students leaving school before the midday heat intensifies considerably, reducing cases of heat exhaustion.
On an organizational and societal level, this timing helps alleviate traffic congestion and distribute traffic density across roads, positively impacting traffic flow in the holy city of Mecca, which experiences high population density and constant movement. This approach aligns perfectly with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 to improve quality of life and provide a sustainable educational and healthcare environment that meets the highest international standards.
Ongoing efforts to ensure school discipline
In closing, the General Directorate of Education in the Makkah Region affirmed its commitment to providing a suitable learning environment and implementing all necessary organizational measures to ensure the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and administrative staff. The Directorate emphasized the importance of all parties involved in the educational process adhering to the established schedules to achieve the highest levels of school discipline and optimal utilization of learning time, thus contributing to the development of a generation that is both academically and practically accomplished.
