Food establishments in Mecca closed and fines reached 10 million riyals
As part of intensive preparations for the holy month of Ramadan, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) conducted extensive inspection campaigns in the holy city of Mecca, led by its CEO, Professor Dr. Hisham bin Saad Al-Jadhey. These field visits resulted in the detection of several serious violations in food factories and warehouses, prompting the immediate closure of the offending establishments to ensure the safety of pilgrims, visitors, and residents of Mecca during Ramadan.
Dr. Al-Jadaei conducted a field visit to inspect the production lines and supply chains, ensuring these facilities' compliance with Saudi technical regulations and standards. These proactive measures are part of the Authority's strategy to strengthen the food safety system, focusing on verifying the accuracy of nutritional information, storage conditions, and sound operational practices before products reach retail outlets and markets.
Deterrent penalties to protect public health
In emphasizing the strict enforcement of regulations, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) affirmed that it will not tolerate any violations that could jeopardize consumer health. The SFDA clarified that the Food Law and its implementing regulations stipulate severe penalties for violators, ranging from permanent closure of the business to imprisonment, or the imposition of substantial fines that can reach up to 10 million Saudi Riyals. These stringent penalties aim to deter illegal practices and ensure that everyone adheres to the highest standards of quality and safety.
