Saving pilgrims in Mecca through advanced interventional cardiac techniques

In a new medical achievement reflecting the ongoing development of the Saudi healthcare system, King Abdullah Medical City in Makkah, a member of the Makkah Health Cluster, successfully saved the lives of a Yemeni pilgrim and a Turkish pilgrim. This remarkable medical accomplishment was achieved through the use of interventional cardiac techniques , supported by a virtual cardiac care system and smart health monitoring technologies, thus setting a global standard for the integration of digital specialized care to serve pilgrims during the Hajj season.
The evolution of healthcare for pilgrims throughout history
Historically, since its unification, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has placed great importance on the health of pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah. Medical services have evolved from simple field clinics to fully integrated medical cities equipped with the latest global technologies. Providing free and advanced healthcare to millions of people in a limited geographical area and within a short timeframe is a unique challenge, one that the Kingdom has successfully managed. Today, the introduction of digital technologies and artificial intelligence represents a qualitative leap in the history of field medicine, enhancing the speed of response to critical cases and ensuring the safety of pilgrims so they can perform their rituals with ease and peace of mind.
Saving the Yemeni pilgrim thanks to smart interventional cardiac techniques
The medical city explained that the first case involved a Yemeni pilgrim with a history of coronary artery disease who had previously undergone coronary artery bypass surgery in Yemen in 2022. The pilgrim experienced intermittent heart rhythm disturbances and a slow pulse while in Mecca. After his initial condition was stabilized through the intervention of the Saudi Red Crescent Authority, he was provided with a smartwatch connected to a virtual cardiac care program, enabling him to safely complete his rituals while his vital signs were closely monitored.
Later, the watch data showed a recurring drop in heart rate, and the built-in electrocardiogram (ECG) revealed a serious electrical disturbance. The nursing team remotely contacted the pilgrim, who was experiencing dizziness and increasing fatigue. Upon reviewing the readings, he was diagnosed with a complete heart block, a critical condition requiring immediate intervention. He was called to the emergency room, and the medical team successfully implanted a permanent pacemaker, allowing the pilgrim to continue his pilgrimage in good health.
A precise intervention to rescue a Turkish pilgrim in the holy sites
In the second case, the Heart Center at King Abdullah Medical City successfully treated a 70-year-old Turkish pilgrim who suffered a sudden fainting spell in the holy sites. Detailed examinations revealed she was suffering from severe and advanced aortic stenosis with acute calcification, an enlarged heart muscle, and impaired circulatory function.
The multidisciplinary medical team decided to perform transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) using a state-of-the-art valve, avoiding the need for open-heart surgery, along with the implantation of a temporary pacemaker to ensure the highest levels of safety. The procedure was successfully performed via the femoral artery under local anesthesia, restoring normal blood flow without any complications. The patient regained full consciousness, her symptoms resolved, and she was transferred to the cardiac intensive care unit for further monitoring. The temporary pacemaker was subsequently and successfully removed.
The regional and international impact of Saudi medical excellence
The success of such complex operations has an impact not only locally but also regionally and internationally. It demonstrates to the world the capability of Saudi expertise to handle the most complex medical cases during peak times. It also reinforces the Kingdom's position as a leading global authority in mass gathering medicine and reassures Islamic countries and the international community about the exceptional and free care provided to pilgrims, reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's humanitarian and honorable image on the international stage.
