Saving the lives of pilgrims in Mecca: Urgent and successful medical interventions

In a new medical achievement reflecting the advancements in healthcare in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah Medical City in Makkah, a member of the Makkah Health Cluster, successfully saved the lives of pilgrims in Makkah. Urgent care was provided to 14 pilgrims of various nationalities. This accomplishment followed the rapid digital and medical management of critical and complex cases, including acute strokes, gastrointestinal bleeding, and bile duct stones and obstructions. This was achieved within the framework of an urgent care model that complements the advanced specialized care system provided to pilgrims during the Hajj season.

A historic journey of medical service to the pilgrims

This achievement was not a sudden occurrence, but rather the culmination of a long history of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's commitment to providing the best healthcare services to pilgrims. Over the decades, healthcare during the Hajj season has evolved from simple field hospitals and primary care centers to fully integrated medical cities equipped with the latest global technologies. The wise leadership has placed the health and safety of the pilgrims at the forefront of its priorities, making the Kingdom's experience in "mass gathering medicine" and managing health crises during these massive gatherings a model studied globally. All these complex specialized services are provided free of charge to pilgrims, embodying the highest ideals of humanity and exceptional care.

Precise interventions for stroke treatment

The medical city explained that the Neuroscience Center received a critical case of a patient from Uzbekistan via the emergency department. She was suffering from an acute stroke that caused hemiplegia and a sudden loss of speech. Upon arrival, the stroke pathway was activated according to established treatment protocols. After clinical examinations and advanced diagnostic imaging revealed an acute thrombosis in one of the main cerebral arteries, the patient was urgently transferred to the cerebral catheterization lab. There, the specialized medical team successfully performed a clot removal procedure and restored blood flow to the brain using precise interventional techniques, which contributed to the patient regaining full mobility and speech and making a complete recovery.

Advanced techniques for ending critical blockages and bleeding

In the same context, the Advanced Endoscopy Center at the Medical City treated 13 pilgrims of various nationalities, including five Turkish pilgrims, four Indonesian pilgrims, two Afghan pilgrims, one Syrian pilgrim, and one Jordanian pilgrim. Their cases required urgent intervention using the latest advanced therapeutic endoscopy techniques, which helped stabilize their vital signs and prevented serious health complications.

The medical city explained that its medical teams used advanced techniques to treat gallstones and bile duct obstructions. These techniques included endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), SpyGlass, and laser lithotripsy, in addition to the implantation of temporary plastic and permanent metal stents, depending on the medical needs of each case. Furthermore, cases of gastrointestinal bleeding were managed using an advanced treatment system that included drug injections, thermal treatment techniques, advanced mechanical clips (OVESCO), and direct coagulation powders (Hemospray). This enhanced the rapid and effective control of bleeding, reduced the likelihood of open surgical interventions, and enabled the use of self-expanding metal stents to restore vital gastrointestinal functions.

It had a profound impact on saving the lives of pilgrims in Mecca, both locally and internationally

The continued success in saving the lives of pilgrims in Mecca is of paramount importance and far-reaching impact. Locally, these achievements reflect the utmost operational readiness and effective integration between medical teams and advanced specialized technologies possessed by Saudi personnel, perfectly aligned with the objectives of the Health Sector Transformation Program and Saudi Vision 2030 to provide a safe and healthy Hajj experience. Regionally and internationally, this exceptional care sends a reassuring message to all Muslim countries worldwide that their pilgrims are in safe hands, and reaffirms the Kingdom's global leadership in providing advanced healthcare services in the most challenging and crowded circumstances.
