Egyptian pilgrim saved from heart attack in Mecca | Medical achievement

King Abdullah Medical City in the Holy Capital, affiliated with the Makkah Health Cluster, recorded a new medical achievement represented in saving a 67-year-old Egyptian pilgrim, after she suffered an emergency health crisis represented by an acute heart attack and severe weakness of the heart muscle immediately after she finished performing the Umrah rituals.
The Kingdom's historic efforts in caring for the pilgrims
For decades, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has placed the health and safety of pilgrims at the forefront of its priorities. This incident highlights the tremendous advancements in the Saudi healthcare system, which provides free, high-quality medical services to Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. The "Safe Heart Zone" initiative launched by the Saudi Ministry of Health is a pioneering model for rapid response to cardiac emergencies in the vicinity of the Grand Mosque, reflecting a long-standing and ongoing commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment for all those who visit the Holy Sites from around the world.
Details of the medical mission to save an Egyptian pilgrim
The story began with a swift and accurate diagnosis at Al Haram Hospital, where the patient underwent urgent tests as part of the Safe Heart Initiative protocols. The results of the cardiac catheterization revealed extremely dangerous blockages in the left main coronary artery, as well as the other three arteries, posing a direct threat to her life and necessitating immediate surgical intervention.
Thanks to swift and high-level field coordination, the patient was transferred at midnight from Al-Haram Hospital to King Abdullah Medical City. Upon arrival, specialized medical teams in cardiac surgery, anesthesia, and intensive care began a meticulous assessment of her condition, and the operating room was prepared in record time to prevent any further complications that could affect the stability of her weakened heart muscle.
Emergency open-heart surgery and a resounding success
At 2:00 AM, the patient was taken to the operating room for emergency open-heart surgery. The complex procedure lasted approximately 150 minutes (two and a half hours) of continuous and meticulous medical work to correct the coronary artery blockages. Thanks to God, these efforts were a complete success, as the surgical team was able to restore blood flow to the heart with high efficiency. The patient was then transferred to the intensive care unit for close monitoring and was successfully weaned off the ventilator the following day after her vital signs had stabilized significantly.
The regional and international impact of the development of Saudi healthcare
The success of the healthcare system in Mecca in handling such complex cases has not only a local impact but also a widespread positive impact regionally and internationally. It sends a reassuring message to millions of Muslims worldwide that the Kingdom possesses advanced medical infrastructure and qualified personnel capable of handling even the most critical emergencies. This success also aligns with the objectives of the Guests of God Service Program, one of the programs under Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to enrich and enhance the Hajj and Umrah experience by providing exceptional services in all areas, most notably advanced healthcare. The patient is expected to be discharged from the hospital soon after completing her recovery and necessary medical rehabilitation.
