Saudi Arabia weather: Extreme heat in the Eastern Province and rain in Jazan

The National Center for Meteorology issued new weather alerts regarding the fluctuating weather conditions in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. The Kingdom is experiencing a sharp contrast in weather patterns, ranging from record-breaking temperatures in the Eastern Province to moderate to heavy thunderstorms in the highlands of the Jazan region. These alerts are part of the Center's ongoing efforts to raise awareness among citizens and residents about the need to take precautions and avoid outdoor activities during critical times to mitigate the health and environmental risks resulting from these severe weather fluctuations.

A unique climatic variation is dominating Saudi Arabia's weather today

The National Center of Meteorology explained that the Eastern Province, specifically Al-Udayd Governorate, is experiencing a severe heat wave, with maximum temperatures expected to reach between 47 and 48 degrees Celsius. The report indicated that this heat wave is expected to continue, God willing, until 5:00 PM. Such high temperatures are a characteristic feature of the Eastern Province's summer season due to its arid desert geography and its proximity to bodies of water, which sometimes increases humidity. Experts consistently advise drinking sufficient amounts of water and avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours to prevent heatstroke and heat exhaustion.

Thunderstorms and flash floods bring relief to Jazan's weather

In stark contrast, the National Center for Meteorology warned of moderate rainfall in the Jazan region of southwestern Saudi Arabia, accompanied by strong winds causing dust storms, reduced horizontal visibility, thunderstorms, and flash floods in valleys. This weather pattern includes the governorates of Al-Harath, Al-Dayer Bani Malik, Al-Raith, Al-Ardah, Al-Aydabi, Fifa, and Haroub, as well as open areas and highways. This weather is expected to continue until 8:00 PM, requiring drivers to exercise extreme caution while driving and to avoid valleys and ravines.

The geographical diversity of the Kingdom and its impact on weather phenomena

This significant variation in weather patterns stems from the vast geographical diversity of Saudi Arabia. While hot, dry tropical air masses dominate the eastern and central regions, the southwestern highlands, such as Jazan and Asir, are influenced by humid monsoon winds originating from the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. This leads to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds and regular summer rainfall. This climatic diversity contributes to the richness of the Kingdom's natural environment, but it also necessitates constant preparedness from relevant authorities, such as the Civil Defense, to address the risks of flash floods and protect lives and property.
