Weather alerts: Rain and wind expected in Al-Baha and Mecca

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued an advanced weather alert today, indicating continued chances of thunderstorms accompanied by active winds and significant weather changes across large parts of the Al-Baha and Makkah regions. These alerts are part of the center's ongoing monitoring of weather fluctuations to ensure the safety of citizens and residents.
Weather details for the Al-Baha region
The center explained in its report that the Al-Baha region is experiencing unstable weather conditions, characterized by moderate to heavy rainfall. This includes Al-Baha city itself, as well as a large number of its governorates and affiliated centers, namely: Baljurashi, Al-Aqiq, Al-Qura, Bani Hassan, Al-Mandaq, Al-Makhwah, Qalwah, Al-Hajrah, and Ghamid Al-Zanad, extending to areas adjacent to these regions. The report indicated that this rainfall will be accompanied by active surface winds, which may stir up dust and sand in some open areas, in addition to reducing horizontal visibility and the occurrence of thunderstorms, necessitating caution while driving and traveling.
Weather in Al-Ardiyat Governorate, Makkah Al-Mukarramah
In a related development, the National Center for Meteorology warned that Al-Ardiyat Governorate in the Makkah Region would be affected by a similar weather system. The forecast includes thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds, a significant decrease in horizontal visibility, and the possibility of lightning strikes. The center indicated that this weather system is expected to continue, God willing, until 8:00 PM today, and urged everyone to follow weather updates through official channels.
Geographical nature and its impact on weather
These warnings are particularly important given the rugged terrain of the Al-Baha region and parts of Makkah. These areas lie within the Sarawat Mountains, characterized by their mountainous terrain and steep slopes. This topography contributes to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds and heavy rainfall, which can quickly lead to flash floods in valleys and streams. The Al-Baha region, in particular, is a significant tourist and agricultural area in the Kingdom, with its agricultural sector heavily reliant on seasonal rainfall. However, the heavy rainfall can pose a danger if people do not adhere to safe road routes and stay away from floodplains.
Safety and Civil Defense Guidelines
In conjunction with weather alerts, the General Directorate of Civil Defense typically urges citizens and residents to exercise caution in such conditions. Authorities emphasize the importance of staying away from valleys, flood channels, and dams during rainfall, and avoiding the risk of crossing valleys, no matter how low the water level may seem. Drivers are also advised to maintain a safe distance and avoid speeding, especially when visibility is reduced due to fog or heavy rain, to ensure the safety of lives and property.
