Saudi Arabia weather today: Rain in Asir and weather warnings for several regions

The National Center for Meteorology issued an important weather alert today for Saudi Arabia , indicating expectations of moderate to heavy rainfall, particularly in the Asir region. The center explained in its daily report that the weather conditions will continue until 8:00 PM this evening, urging citizens and residents in those areas to take precautions.
The warning included the governorates of Rijal Alma and Mahayil, where rain is expected to be accompanied by various weather phenomena, including strong winds, near-zero horizontal visibility, hail, and flash floods in valleys and ravines. The rainy conditions are not limited to Asir; forecasts also extend to parts of Jazan, Al-Baha, and Makkah, reaching as far south as Madinah, where the chance of thunderstorms and rain continues.
Geographical and climatic context of the southern highlands
These weather fluctuations are a consequence of the unique geographical and climatic characteristics of the southwestern highlands of Saudi Arabia. The Sarawat Mountains, encompassing the regions of Asir, Al-Baha, and Jazan, are known for their distinct climate compared to the rest of the Kingdom's desert regions. The towering mountainous terrain acts as a magnet for moist winds, leading to cloud condensation and seasonal rainfall. While this rain is vital for agriculture in these areas, it also necessitates a robust infrastructure for flood drainage due to the steepness of the mountains.
The impact of wind and dust on other areas
Meanwhile, regarding the central, northern, and eastern regions, the weather report indicated a noticeable increase in surface winds stirring up dust and sand. Parts of the Riyadh, Qassim, Hail, Al-Jawf, Northern Borders, and Najran regions are expected to be affected by these dust storms, which may reduce horizontal visibility, especially on highways and open roads.
The importance of warnings and safety procedures
These warnings are of paramount importance for the preservation of lives and property. The relevant authorities, including the Civil Defense, urge everyone to adhere to safety instructions during these weather conditions, stay away from floodplains and valleys, and avoid low-lying areas where water may accumulate. Drivers are also advised to exercise extreme caution while driving in areas experiencing rain or dust storms, due to the risk of vehicles skidding or reduced visibility.
