Saudi Water Authority: Tank inspection reduces bills and detects leaks

The Saudi Water Authority stressed the need to adhere to periodic inspection of household tanks and internal connections, noting that this step is the cornerstone for early detection of hidden leaks, which are often the main reason behind the unjustified increase in water consumption and consequently the high value of monthly bills for consumers.
Common leak locations and how to fix them
In detailing the critical points that must be monitored, the authority explained that leakage sources are not limited to one location, but rather encompass a wide network within the home. The most prominent of these sources include:
- Bathrooms and kitchens: where there are many connections and valves that may become damaged over time.
- Overhead and underground tanks: specifically the "tank neck" and the float, whose malfunction may lead to the waste of huge quantities of water without the residents noticing.
- Home yards and gardens: where there are irrigation extensions that may be affected by weather conditions.
- Water heaters: which may corrode from the inside, causing hidden leaks.
The authority called on citizens and residents to check that the walls are free of cracks or signs of dampness, and to address any technical defects immediately upon discovery to ensure the safety of the building and reduce waste.
National context: Preserving water resources is a shared responsibility
This warning comes at a time when Saudi Arabia is making tremendous efforts to enhance water security, as water is considered one of the most precious natural resources in the region. The Kingdom is investing billions of riyals in desalination and long-distance water transport projects to ensure its delivery to consumers. For example, the Eastern Province and other regions are experiencing a surge in desalinated water production, making the conservation of every drop a national duty and a societal responsibility to ensure the sustainability of this resource for future generations, in line with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 to improve water consumption efficiency.
Economic impact and infrastructure protection
Beyond its national importance, early leak detection has direct economic benefits for residents. Hidden leaks not only inflate utility bills but also pose a real threat to home infrastructure. Leaked water can penetrate building foundations and concrete, leading to corrosion of reinforcing steel and the appearance of cracks that cost exorbitant sums to repair later. Therefore, using water-saving devices and maintaining continuous monitoring is a smart investment that protects the property and saves money.
The authority concluded its statement by emphasizing that proactive maintenance steps enhance the sustainability of supplies and ensure efficient use, calling on everyone to interact positively with awareness campaigns to rationalize consumption.
